You can always count on BJ Bunneh3000 to get you thinking. Come and see what he thinks can be done to revolutionize the stale FPS genre.
I think military FPSs need to move in the direction of ARMA. Sadly, Battlefield was once fairly realistic and continued to improve, but then it went all CoD. SOCOM was once realistic, but the series has pretty much just died. We need more detail, more granularity, no "perks", no autoaim, bullet drop, drift, etc. and more skill required to run vehicles. With modern console hardware, they'd have no problem running ARMA III or at least ARMA II. Those games offer huge sandboxes of fun.
Problem is casual games sell. Activision doesn't even pretend Call of Duty is a hardcore game. They came out and said it point blank. And as much as Ghosts sucks, and was panned. It's selling like hotcakes and the mediocre sequel is most likely already underway.
"When I think of games about war, there is always one question… WHY?" This is the reason I've stopped playing almost all PvP shooters. It just feels like I'm never accomplishing anything and I see the same box maps over and over and over again. It has gotten too repetitive for me. I am really hoping that developers take notice of games like FireFall, Defiance, and (hopefully)Destiny. I think this would be better way to go. I couldn't even imagine how sweet ArmA III would be if it had missions/scenarios like Defiance.
Stop making them.
In the end the computer realized no body wins in the game of war!
Socom was for me still the best tactical shooter, while Modern Warfare 1 was the best first person shooter for MP. Every game just keeps addin more and more shit, instead of going to the basics. How about just adding more gameplay that doesnt involve shooting, (this includes SP,) the biggest thing that holds back most FPS is no beta. Entire modes/levels/weapons are broken. Also Positioning has little to no importance now, where as before and like in real combat it is essential. The FPS genre is boring to me anyways now. If its tactics Id rather spend time playing SC where there is no skill ceiling.
Also, why do we need games to be so realistic? FPS like TimeSplitters were so awesome because they did whatever they wanted, 150 playable characters Map editors, 9 game modes, ai teammates ... Hell just make something cool for once. FPS take themselves oh so serious. This author makes some great points but id rather he focused on the worst part about this genre... The singleplayer.
