Cheaper, Entertainment-Only Xbox One Is On The Way, Claims Reveal Date Leaker

A game-free, entertainment-only Xbox One is still on the way, respected tech blogger Paul Thurrott has declared. According to this illustrious personage, the console will shift at some point after the standard Xbox One, will be a lot cheaper, and will thus outsell its older brother by a considerable margin.

The story is too old to be commented.

Definitely an interesting idea! I can see that being a big hit if all the non-gaming functionality is as good as it's reported to be.

Personally, not my cup of tea. But I'd love to see how something like that is received.

BippityBoppityB001770d ago

Why don't they make a cheaper 'Games only' version. I'm sure it would fly off the shelves.

DeadManIV1770d ago

That, sir, is a great idea

mikeslemonade1770d ago

Well as gamers first, this is pretty lame.

minimur121770d ago

I don't believe a word thurrot says, I swear nothing he says is true.

Xbox will cost $300 with $5 / month for 2 years. Yeah right.

They'll show this and that at the even! Oops no they didn't

Insomnia_841770d ago

That's exactly what I was thinking!

It shows what their vision is, gamers are not a priority, it has never been since their reveal. Gaming was just the only way to get into peoples livingroom, they said it themselves years ago!

This really sucks!!

Persistantthug1770d ago (Edited 1770d ago )

Microsoft Corp isn't as interested in the gaming side of the XBOX One as much as they are interested in the potential of the TV and other media features.

There's more money in the latter.

pompombrum1770d ago

Too much logic here.. if they are going to offer a non gaming Xbox One, I really don't see what excuses they can make for not doing a kinect free games console at a cheaper price.

It will be interesting to see a non gaming Xbox One though.. like will they still have the audacity to stick everything behind a pay wall? The online gaming alone is worth the gold membership however trying to justify paying for just features that are free on most devices would be a bit much.

malokevi1770d ago

Because ppl who do nothing but game are few and far between, and ms knows it!

Face it, you are part of a meaninglessly small minority.

=)

indysurfn1770d ago (Edited 1770d ago )

Yeah this is taking games SECOND to another level. No games allowed is more like it.
And who is going to buy a Microsoft made cable box that does not play games?

And what is up with the console will go away because it forces you into a 'special room'? First of all it is more like ALLOWS me to get comfy with my big screen 3dtv, and some nachos!

Now where will I find my big screen tv on a tablet, is it on the side? uh uh I know (WARNING sarcasm coming) While at work, I can go outside during lunch, point my tablet at the ugly concrete wall with my tables built in 800 watt projector tech, in the middle of winter, connect my controller to my only USB port on my tablet, put on my headphones, and play halo 19 the trilogy!
Now that's convenient!

medman1770d ago

They already make a cheaper 'games only' version. It's called the PS4. And it has most of the best first party exclusives. And for less money you get more gaming performance.

Not to be prude but what's the point besides "voice" integration and having a skype box (if camera is sold with the media only unit).

You still need the cable/satellite box plugged into the Xbox? Unless this new device is cheaper than Chromecast 2.0 | appleTV | Roku.

Drewidian1770d ago

I'd copy and paste my response to you, but I'm just going to say read my response to Jay2 at 7.1. Then you will understand why this makes sense. Granted it is speculation, but think about what's happened in the last several years.

1) Microsoft pilots a 2 year subscription service for an Xbox 360 which includes Xbox live for $99.

2) Microsoft sells its Mediaroom technology to I believe Ericsson. I suspect they did this to not be in direct competition with their cable partners; ie Sky, Comcast, Time Warner, Verizon, and about 50 others world wide.

3) Microsoft says that they want to support ALL of Xbox Live services with the Xbox One world wide in the coming years. They've pushed for Xbox Music and Video to be available world wide with Windows 8 and keep pushing for more and more countries with the agreements acquired with Nokia Music.

4) Microsoft has literally "Hundreds of TV Projects" in various stages of development including their flagship IP Halo TV series being developed and produced by Stephen Spielberg. All to be available exclusively in the Xbox Video store.

5) Microsoft's big focus has been on TV since the launch to get those partners excited and say that they are committed to that vision of a console that does everything in one.

2014 is going to be an interesting year.

christocolus1770d ago (Edited 1770d ago )

Well i think its a good idea as long as games dont take a back seat...but even sony has the vita tv which is a stripped down psp for entetainment. imo they are both good business strategies...both companies have invested so much into creating these hardware.they need to look for alternative means to make money out of them even if it means venturing out of gaming..it will appeal to many corporations especially those focused solely in media....i can see my office buying into this ..if ms keeps focusing on improving their studios, creating new game studios, new ips, hiring new devs and getting more third party exclusives the way they are doing now then all will be good...that aside nov 22 is almost here... cant wait

OrangePowerz1770d ago

From what I have seen of the VitaTV it`s not focused on entertainment and rather on playing the games on a TV and enabling PS4 streaming to any TV.

christocolus1770d ago (Edited 1770d ago )

@OrangeP

So far its a rumor, nothing official has been announced..but if true it wont be too far fetched to believe ms could integrate xbx one game streaming via cloud or digital downloads now would it?

XabiDaChosenOne1770d ago

The PSvitatv is exactly what the name implies, its a PSVita that you play on your TV. All of this was explained at the reveal, keep up.

PSVita1770d ago

VitaTV will stream your ps4 through remote play. That includes games, music, movies etc.

DeadlyFire1770d ago

Why would they call it Xbox if its entertainment only. This is like Nintendo calling the Wii 2 WiiU instead. Makes zero marketing sense.

XabiDaChosenOne1770d ago

You mean that meaningless minority that just helped the PS4 sell a million consoles in one day? Yup, so small

malokevi1770d ago

Last I checked, PS4 does things besides gaming? Though, I'd be hard pressed to say it does any of them very well =P

...and whether it actually does gaming well has yet to be seen, lol :D

XabiDaChosenOne1770d ago (Edited 1770d ago )

So according to you the PS4 just broke sales record for not being able to do anything well? Sounds legit.
And there are people in that one million that bought a PS4 for just netflix and music unlimited? Sounds even better.

Dragonborn3121770d ago

I think it is an interesting business idea. I could see it being popular depending on the price. It is not something that I am interested in (I want my gaming features) but I could see why non-gamers could enjoy it.

Bigpappy1770d ago (Edited 1770d ago )

I don't believe this rumor. Mainly because it makes no sense to me.

The price will not stop people who want the features from buying and X1. The only reason I see a business using this is for Skype meetings.

AceBlazer131770d ago

Entertainment only? Why not get Apple tv or chromecast or an actual xbone or better yet a pc.

GreenRanger1770d ago (Edited 1770d ago )

A games console that doesn't play games?!

http://koti.mbnet.fi/samixz...

Sarcasm1770d ago

They are already heading in that direction.

christocolus1770d ago (Edited 1770d ago )

@septic

Ignore these guys...they are quick to jump out and spill trash out of their mouths..they say ms is already going that direction but yet their line up for launch and next year so far looks alot better than sonys and before sfbs start ranting..i am getting a ps4 too but that doesnt make me blind to logic and reason....isnt the psvita tv a stripped down psp focused more on entertainment?..you guys can be so unreasonable and biased....smh

indysurfn1770d ago (Edited 1770d ago )

@christocolus No the PSvita is not, it is a game machine that does not have a screen, instead it lets you connect to a actual tv to play the games. It is just a cheaper PSvita for people that want to play PSVITA games at home (especially people that want to play a lot of JRPGs)
