Usually it's related to trying to work out whether the sewer opening / hatch / door is one that's going to unexpectedly not give you access (or height in the case of hatches) to go back once you're through it. The problem is that the sewer opening / hatch / door often gives the siren-like impression of being the route where the optional collectables will be. When you find out that you should have been looking for those in the section you had already been in (which, unknown to you, wasn't going to reveal a more conventional way of proceeding), you feel cheated and bluffed.
