Where have all the good launch titles gone?

"Remember when launch games didn’t suck? The glorious days of Super Mario 64 and Halo are behind us and we’re left with a couple of good-but-not-great exclusives and a flood of multiplatform titles.

Heck, the SNES launched with Super Mario World, Pilotwings and even F-Zero. What happened to quality launches like that? Honestly, they’re probably gone forever but the reasons are hard to argue with.

The modern state of the gaming industry certainly takes part of the blame. As the money at stake piles up, the primary focus for most studios has shifted from creating a great game to creating a game that sells well. Sure bets like sequels have become the gold standard and innovation is largely left to the indie developers." - Ken Smith (Dead Rising 3, Industry, PS4, Resogun, Super Mario World, Xbox One)

Don't mind the misleading image.
The PS4 a lot of the best games on their system.
Not just 1 or 2 mascots.

All consoles will have great games.
But it just seem you can't have a Nintendo without Mario nor an Xbox without Halo while PS continuously evolve and weren't scared to try out new things.

i disagree. sony has picked up great 1st party talent, and they have always been great to 3rd party devs. so yes, there has been a plethora of great titles on sony platforms, ranging from different to standard triple A, and from big names to small. that being said, i do not think that their lack of a sort of "mascot" can be attributed to their creativity in other areas. just doesnt seem to make much sense. if anything, it's because they have been able to rely on their huge library of hard-core games that they never really needed to succeed at creating a kind of "household" name that even mothers can recognize.

I think it's dumb how people get so hung up on day 1 games. There is a console's lifetime of games to look forward to.
UltimateMaster  +   402d ago
Also "What happened to gaming launch?"
As if it's a huge deal.
The PS Vita had the most games at launch in gaming history yet people complained there were no games.
The PS4 has barely a handful of exclusives yet it sold over 1 million.
Launch Games aren't the be all end all of a console.

Interesting question but I think it all boils down to price. We have lost a lot of the middle market developers and all of a sudden it aint so cheap to make a game now. I brought this up before on another launch article but I will say it again: Look at the Dreamcast launch a lot of variety in there BUT also a good chunk of the games were middle market titles. In addition we also had quite a few arcade ports in that launch too (you will never see that again).

@chief i was dead ass about to drop $600 on ps3 cause it was this rumor god of war 2 was gonna be ps3 only in 2007. but sony later said is was coming only for ps2 so i did was brought gow and the rest for halo3 bundle. And I never look back, but man every gamer was laughing how the launch title for ps3 were terrible. I got ps4 and Im happy gamer

The original Xbox had Halo: Combat Evolved. No game for the Xbox One launch looks to come close. Besides, does it matter if the PS4 or Xbox One have a lot of OK titles and a couple good ones?

Killzone says hi. Resistance on the PS3 says hi. No good launch games? you must be high.

resistance 3 was great, but not a launch title. resistance: fall of man was, and it was pretty middling, in my opinion.

killzone shadow fall, however, is a great ps4 launch game. i'm finding the campaign to be really good, and graphically it beats out literally everything else out there, and i say that as a PC gamer with a rig that can max out anything i throw at it.

Can't hold a candle to Crysis 3 in the graphics department. Especially since it's using prerendered cutscenes.
gillri  +   402d ago
Yeah it looks a step up from crysis 3 on full settings and its only a launch title which always dont take full advantage of the hardware or even close to it

buddy you forgot about Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire, Genji: Days of the Blade, Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom Ridge Racer 7 those was 2006 launch tittle exclusive for ps3 only those games was beyond trash

Game publishers are caught in this weird middle ground where the market is still mostly on ps360 but there's now the next gen. I am hoping for a ps4 edition of gta5 to light it up.

Pretty sure he was talking about the original Resistance, which was pretty damn close to a launch title, if it wasn't available AT launch.

I don't think that any of the PS4 or Xbox One Launch games suck. I actually think that this launch line up is way better than last gens launch line up for both consoles.
_FantasmA_  +   402d ago
True. Its definitely the best one that I can remember. PS4 has 5 shooters already!! The only thing I really wanted was Drive Club. Man, that hurt like a dagger. I was really looking forward to that. But I'd rather have a complete, polished game instead of a rushed turd in the toilet. So I still have that to look forward to next year. Its kind of funny that Exbox doesn't have an exclusive shooter to launch. Its official: PS4 is better for shooters.
McScroggz  +   402d ago
Super Mario 64 is the best launch game of all time, and I'd be shocked if there will ever be a launch game that can match it. Halo: Combat Evolved did come pretty close though.

Altered Beast from the Sega Genesis launch still holds a special place in my heart...

I have a question: When was the last time a console launched with an IP that already was big and was a system seller?

Nintendo: Always had Mario

Seems like other consoles don't really have that Mascot type of a game. Why wouldn't Xbox release with a brand new Halo game? Or Sony a GT game?
Yodagamer  +   402d ago
Xbox 360 is kinda a weird beast imo. it's one of the only consoles that sold on the strength of multiplats. It had it's great exclusives, but the multiplats sold it because everyone was playing xbl instead of psn. Which is why we had most games sold better on xbox this gen. Sony has sold on it's huge variety of exclusives which is why i like Sony's consoles.
kewlkat007  +   402d ago
Sony has 1 Generation ahead of Microsoft and have had the pedigree with exclusive games.

MS should open more studios..but their XBL has been the bread and butter.

Both manufacturers have strengths and weaknesses. neither is perfect. That's why I've always eventually get both consoles. Maybe MS will get it this gen with more studios. I hope Sony's online infrastructure improves, now that they are getting some money off subscriptions.

halo/gears deadly sales & goty combo combination, kill sony chances for a comeback in the states/worldwide. gears1 5mil, halo3 13mil, gear2 5mil, halo reach 9mil, gears3 5mil, halo 4 8/9mil.

Console manufactures have a hard enough time keeping up with demand at launch. for that reason, Publishers have to choose between making an exclusively next gen game that will be exposed to a limited audience, or making a game that can bridge generations. The latter is certainly the most cost effective approach.
Bonerboy  +   402d ago
Where have they gone? Well that's easy...all the sub par launch titles will be buffed up with purposely withheld overpriced DLC. ;-)
dennett316  +   402d ago
Remember when unbelievably ridiculous hyperbole wasn't the norm in opinion pieces? Does Killzone suck? Resogun? Battlefield 4? Assassins Creed 4? Let's not be stupid about this....give me any of those games over Perfect Dark Zero or Motorstorm. Mario 64 and Halo were the exceptions rather than the rule.
Damn, my Megadrive came with Altered Beast for goodness sake...talk about crappy launches.
