EA: PS4 1.50 firmware causes stability issues

According to Electronic Arts, the PS4's 1.50 firmware can cause a PS4 to malfunction.

"Sony has released a firmware update for the PlayStation 4 that is required for many features on the console. However, this update also results in stability issues while playing games on the system.

This affects all games on the PS4, including EA titles, causing crashing/freezing and non-responsive connections between the player's console and their TV Screen." (PS4)

Update UPDATE: EA took down the link! Most of the text of the (now dead) link is quoted above.

The rest of the text is here:

"Unfortunately since it's an issue with Sony's firmware, it requires a new update to fix it. Sony is working to resolve the issue as quickly as they can. They will update their System Update page as new versions are made available, and we will keep this page updated as we find out more."

Surprise! Surprise! A Sony firmware update causes system instability. This has never happened before... /S

The thing is, it doesn't seem to be affecting all systems. Is it inevitable or is it determined by the build quality of each box?

Launch firmware issues? Expected.

For the record, mine works fine.

Hardware issues. Software issues. Man, Sony is batting 1.000. I love all the damage control posts. But if this was the Xbox One having issues, man it would be the end of the world for all you people.

I wish I knew. I've been watching the "please wait" for 20 minutes now while it fails to log me into PSN.

Going on 2 hours now of failing to log in.

My god Sony sucks so bad.

So far for me Killzone crashed randomly and sent a report to Sony.

Then while trying to access the store the system froze on me and I had a blue screen even after pressing the power button (I guess it went to stand-by mode as the white light pulsated I wanted to turn it OFF) I had to pull the cord...

Feel sorry for the affected players, but glad i am in the UK and getting it in two weeks, gives Sony time to iron out any problems.

who cares if bf4 has stability issues, im playing kz and until i can get on the store, warframe, dcu ( already have 3 characters), and any other game i decide to play, besides bf4, i already played the ps3 version, its better, but not better enough for me.

My ps3 got bricked by a update and those jerks tried to charge me $213 untill it came out i wasnt the only one so the fixed it for free a week later. Come on sony i had enough of that pay to fix crap with the PS1 and PS2.

I never had a problem with my ps3 on any firmware since launch...

I am having occasional crashes with the ps4 and bf4 and I can't play conquest...

Same here. I havnt had any problems at all.I have been playing BF4,KillzoneShadowfall,Resogun ,Warframe,Blacklight ect withought one problem. I must have been one of the lucky ones.I did download the patch at 12:15am so maybe thats why not to sure.
SuperBlur  +   650d ago
what does the time of you downloading the FW has to do with it? lolll <3
finbars75  +   650d ago
Nomercy it actually plays a big part if you actually listen to what they have been saying.I downloaded the patch before all the crazy started therefor my patch wasnt messed with because of the high traffic. My online has been fine and no problems after the patch.Mine only took 2 seconds not minutes. Thanks for being an idiot as usual.
supes_24  +   650d ago
No issue here either. I downloaded the update via USB drive last night and uploaded the patch to my PS4 when I got it earlier today. Some people should've listened to the reports and ateicles telling you to download it early on a USB to avoid sever overload issues.

davekaos  +   650d ago
I would be willing to bet that those systems with issues downloaded the firmware via ps4 and because of the high network traffic I suspect part of the package corrupted whilst downloading

if you plan on updating do it via usb to be on the safe side
BattleTorn  +   650d ago
Good to hear, I got my USB ready (for when I pick mine up later today)
vitullo31  +   650d ago

davekaos  +   650d ago
Glad the hdd and flash drive upgrade worked fine for you vitullo.

I plan on a 1.5tb hybrid come launch which unfortunately for me is on the 29th.
All firmware updates have been done via usb for me on the ps3 and I have never had an issue plus its quicker
frostypants  +   650d ago
A corrupted package shouldn't even install. A simple checksum would prevent that...no way in hell do they not verify the integrity of the file before installation.
MarkusMcNugen  +   649d ago
frostypants is correct. There is absolutely no way they would allow the update to install without some kind of hash check on the file to verify its integrity. Thats patching 101.

I am enjoying my PS4! I had some trouble logging in to PSN launch night, but it was expected though...everyone was eagerly turning on their beast. The only issue I have had is that the system has locked up 5 times so far and had to reboot in safe mode. I am sure there is a patch incoming.
NeoTribe  +   649d ago

Fangrim  +   650d ago
Fortunately it seems the amount of failing PS4's are fairly low. Let's hope it stays that way.
Kayant  +   650d ago
I knew it wasn't an overheating issue..... My gosh Sony's FW team have really drop the ball here.
Fangrim  +   650d ago
Every firmware update on any console has lead to bricking.

I think a big part of this getting so much attention now is, that a high percentage of people, who unfortunately has a failing PS4, is telling their story online. Combined with the fact that it's launch day, 100 bricked consoles out of tens of thousands can easy be blown up to epic proportions.

At least I hope so - I'd hate for a faulty day one firmware to become a major problem for any console.

ZeroX9876  +   650d ago
Sony expected a 0.4% rate of failure and as of right now, they're still on track.

I had consoles failures before and with more than one brand.
KNWS  +   650d ago
The red line was noticed a few months back, when pictures emerged showing the PS4 going red inside a glass case. When it was taken out it went back to blue. The red line is a sign the system is overheating, but it might also indicate there is other problems with the system too?

I think the update too is causing issues, but i have serious reservations about the PS4, because of its small casing, i think heat may not be properly ventilated out?

The FCC has stated that the ps4 runs cooler than the ps3, there are no problems with ventilation or heat.

I have to wait till the 29th to get my PS4 as I live in the UK and I hope all issues with the firmware are resolved before hand.
Fangrim  +   650d ago
If it works fine without updating, I'd wait until Sony fixes it. Haven't got one yet (I'm in Europe), and I'll wait until a new firmware is released. Better safe than sorry.

The chance of bricking is very low, and I've never had any problems with my PS3 (even with the borked updates), but if I just got my PS4, I'd hate to see it brick on its first day.
Chuk5  +   650d ago
Probably the key thing with the ps4 thus far.
Fiestabrian  +   650d ago

dont risk it for the moment wait until there is like version 1.53 update which will fix these issues. this is the only upside for it releasing later in the uk because stuff like this should be ironed out within a few weeks. in the mean time hope this doesnt become to widespread
richierich  +   650d ago
@MrTehDiNGO me too mate I thought we were unlucky not getting our consoles in the UK until 2 weeks later but it might be actually more positive than I thought if they fix the firmware update problem by then

I'm not being funny but the problems Sony are having are bigger than people would like to admit. IGN
and Kotaku have had faulty units which is not a good sign at all. People are getting the red line and now firmware updates are causing issues.
TIER1xWOLFPACKx  +   650d ago
its the firmware thats causing the issues that have been reported so far apart from kotakus which was due to a bent hdmi pin
Lukas_Japonicus  +   650d ago
Its people like you that over exaggerate things and make them seem more serious than what they are, you completely ignore the hundreds of thousands of people who aren't having problems and focus on the minority who voice their problems on the internet.

"Kotaku have had faulty units which is not a good sign at all. "

They had a bent HDMI pin......

Classic hyperbole and misinformation.

The firmware problem is slightly worrying though.

This is Sony we are talking about right?

Why so surprised about firmware issues. Just look at the ps3 firmware debacles.

Now sony can put that $50 month to use and to add stability to its network infrastructure.
JoeReno  +   650d ago
50 a month? I think you meant for the year.
Lowsnamebrand  +   650d ago
Lol so many people taking a handful of cases and trying to make them seems HUGE. Updated my console via USB at 1230 last night, and only issue I has was the servers were swamp and it took me 2 attempts to log on to psn. Stop trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill and stop bashing a console some don't even have intentions of buying. Its day one, errors are common, and problems will be fixed ASAP. Those who can (the majority) enjoy your console, those unlucky few call Sony get the problem taken care of, if possible ask for compensation. Take pride in peoples hard work, and fanboys stfu, its simple and easy like 123.
badkolo  +   650d ago

When you see an announcement like this from a BIG company it means there is something is going on! They are trying to protect themselves from negative viral marketing.

Why take the heat for another company, especially when fanboys make conclusions out of random "facts"

I am confident that Sony will fix the issues, no company is perfect but some fanboys try as hard as possible to apply damage control
MikeGdaGod  +   650d ago

Anyways, like I said earlier please xbox fan boys no gloating because Karma goes both ways. and if their are problems come xbox one launch sony fan boys remember to keep your pie holes shut. all this nit picking at each other is childish and getting old.
Strikepackage Bravo  +   650d ago
I think Sony was under a lot of pressure to release before Microsoft. This is clear because they appear to have caught MS completely off guard, unfortunately this means Sony had to rush the console together, the number of problems they are having is just too high.
xJumpManx  +   649d ago
Yea that is what I would think as well. I like the hardware and the OS shows promise.
Dee_Cazo  +   649d ago
Yeah that is an excellent point. The fanboys make it seem like Sony has been in the driver seat this whole time thanks to PR missteps from Microsoft.

The truth is Sony has been hurting big time this generation solely because Microsoft stole so much of the market to a 50/50 split. They needed the PS4 to be a success hence the $100 price cut and earlier release date.

If there is one market you dont want to lose it is North America as the sales in NA are more than all the other places combined.

You brought up a great point about the pressure and the n4g idiots will fail to recognize it.

1.51 by Monday haha... Firmware is always a slight ballache on PlayStations, I've had one brick my PS3 and I had to reformat the HDD, so it's to be expected on a brand new system with a brand new OS.

EA are covering themselves nicely though "Our game might be a bit crap, blame someone else." haha
