Sony’s Executives were Cheering and High-Fiving As Microsoft Announced the Price of the Xbox One

SCE Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida shared a colorful piece of information about the competition between Sony and Microsoft, talking about how the Sony camp reacted to the announcement of the price of the Xbox One at E3 (PS4, Shuhei Yoshida, Xbox One)

I'm surprised no one has made a gif of that with Kaz's face pasted on it lol.

Not surprising, the pricing of the Xbox One is probably Microsoft biggest misstep they have made outside of the drm. Arguably even more of a misstep because this plays directly against them with the mass market who looks at price above all else.

A $500 product is going to be a hard sale no matter what, but it becomes a much harder sale when your direct competitor is a $100 cheaper and saying things like they have the most powerful console.

Yeah the 200 extra on the Ps3 really damaged it...

@Irishguy95

The level of desperation in your post is mind numbing.

I'm still surprised that Microsoft gave Sony the price point advantage in this generation of consoles (PS4/X1), specially after what we all saw what happened with the PS3 and it's high price in the past generation. For me, it's a terrible decision by Microsoft.

The forced inclusion of Kinect on ALL X1's might cost them dearly. It's quite a gamble.

They will make their money back by overlaying ads on your TV, and using the Kinect to make sure you actually saw the ad. Then they can make ad companies pay them more. It was so obvious they wanted to do this since the announcement, which is why they were so adamant on trying to force Kinect on everyone. Problem is, people probably won't buy the console after the first rush of sales, and they will hope that TitanFall sells some, but if it doesn't, then they will definitely do a Kinectless bundle.

The kinnect camera is rumored to scan products in living rooms looking for brand logos ie a can of soda with pepsi logo. Pretty sure that data can be very profitable along with promotions with barcodes.

I FORSEE Doritos teaming up with MS for exclusive in game item promotions. Buy a bag of chips, scan product barcode, get Dlc.

Its actually a good marketing tool.
Mystogan  +   278d ago
I'm not sure why, its only a $100 cheaper and that's only because Xbox one includes Kinect. Consumers are going to see that there's a good reason that its more expensive.

I'm going to laugh when Xbox One outsells the PS4 even with the higher price. Do not underestimate the power of Microsoft's marketing money.

they're cheering way too early if you ask me.
Persistantthug  +   278d ago
I wasn't really surprised by the $500 XBOX One price and $100 price differential because I've been on alert to Microsoft Corp exec's XBOX brand aversion for years.

The reason for XBONE's higher price is because XBOX GAMES cannot afford to take the loss because Microsoft Corp will not allow it. Long story short.....if the XBONE takes on anymore financial losses, Microsoft Corp will jettison Microsoft GAMES along with the XBOX brand.

What I was surprised about, was the PS4 being as much as 50% more powerful than the XBONE (40% now). I wasn't expecting the GPU gap to be that much.

Not surprising....

Being $100 cheaper will definitely be a huge factor.

Ms.... I'm getting an Xbox One. But they are being greedy.
And still greedy. Reg 360 should be dirt cheap by now.

And xbox one just be priced competitively at $400.
Boody-Bandit  +   278d ago
That's why I'm not getting an X1. They're are too greedy! MS could've easily had their new console backwards compatible with peripherals if they wanted but NO time for more license agreements and certifications. While partnering with 3rd party companies to bring out all new peripherals. <- That was the final straw for me.

After spending nearly 1200 on a wheel combo set to play Forza 4 and over a 1k+ on lesser wheels? I wasn't about to take it up the poop shoot again by them. If people knew the story behind MS and their fees they would know why some Forza fans such as myself have washed their hands of them this go around.

They simply are excessively greedy.

Yeah all companies are in it for money but MS takes it way too far on trying to milk you for every last cent.

I don't think it is greed so much as it is Kinect costing so damned much. Say what you will about it, but it's not a cheap peripheral.
Boody-Bandit  +   278d ago
Huh?
Where do you get a correlation to Kinect from what I posted?

I'm talking about MS turning their backs on Logitech and Thrustmaster when the 360 first launched. Both were going to make wheels for them but MS wanted to produce their own wheel. By the time MS changed their minds both companies weren't interested any more. At least not higher end versions of their products.

So Fanatec stepped to the plate and starting making wheels that were 360 compatible. They let it be known it wasn't cheap and what a PITA it was to go thru certification with MS. Fanatec just released an Official Forza 4 Wheel when the game launched. Now MS has turned their back on Fanatec and having Thrustmaster make a wheel for the X1.

That's a pretty sh*tty way to treat Fanatec and Forza fans that own those wheels. They aren't cheap.

Yet it appears most wheels will work with the PS4 as will a lot of gaming headphones and other various perps. Sony leaves their hardware open ended where MS wants paid for every perp connected to their hardware. They are too damn greedy.

@creatchee: Its not a cheap peripheral, and no one wanted it. I'd rather have $100 in the pocket and no Kinect.
creatchee  +   278d ago
@above

Sorry, I clicked on the wrong reply - should have been to etownone. I get lost on N4G mobile lol
etownone  +   278d ago
@ creatchee

I agree....

But it's the same scenario as the ps3 with blu ray included.
It drove the price up.... And the 360 had the price advantage.

Kinect is not needed. They already stated that
So why force it to everyone?

"up the poop shoot"

That gave me a Beavis and Butthead flashback. lol

What this shows is how important competition is for the consumer.
ar00043  +   278d ago
I find this quite funny as probably MS was doing the same thing when PS3 came out.. At least Sony learnt from their mistakes!

$100 cheaper console give you more advantage in sales. Not only that but better games and online service. Cheer on Sony and cheer on PS4 gamers.
GreenRanger  +   278d ago
I would like to see what the Microsoft executives did when the price of the PS4 was announced.
HappyWithOneBubble  +   278d ago
I think they changed their pants.
xDHAV0K24x  +   278d ago
let's be honest, if both were at $400, you were still going to buy the system u have been comfortable with the past 2 gens. Why? The games. XB1 could have been $200 but you SONY heads would not buy it because you hate it and vice versa.
ELpork  +   278d ago
This isin't news, This was said right after (Or maybe even during) E3.
devilwillcry  +   278d ago
And microsoft were high fiving when they realised sony was selling bricks not consoles
Belking  +   278d ago
yea, but i bet they aren't cheering anymore now that those consoles are breaking down. The things that make you laugh can also make you cry. Remember that.
