Can you imagine?! Shenmue as exclusive to PS4. Console war WON! :)
xReDeMpTiOnx  +   157d ago | Well said
That game is one of my all time favs. Was way ahead of its time.

And yes if sony could secure shenmue as an exclusive that would be a huge huge deal.
Hatsune-Miku  +   157d ago
While others work on gimmicks and tv features as focal points of their gaming consoles, sony is focused on bringing video games to the playstation with gimmicks and features being secondary to games.

some silly people think ps move, ps eye, eyetoy, ps home are failures without seeing the genius in what sony does. They have just enough support for the niche market thats into them l

Originally a Dreamcast exclusive, then it came to ps2 when Sega left the console business.

mabreu  +   157d ago

Shenmue is one of those games that appear on many "Greatest Video Games of All Time" list. There is a good reason why. This game was way ahead of its time. Many of today's games are greatly influenced by it's design and development. The game developer, Yu Suzuki is a legend, a true "forward-thinker" that is greatly needed in the industry.

Shenmue had revolutionary graphics for that time period. Just imagine how it would look as a PS4 exclusive.
darthv72  +   157d ago
A shenmue 3 has long been in the rumor mill but since sega started producing yakuza, shenmue was put on the back burner.

I still have the original for DC and Shenmue 2 for xbox. to have a Shenmue 3 on PS4 (or XB1) would be much appreciated.

At least sony is listening so why not Sega?
NarooN  +   157d ago

Shenmue was originally a Dreamcast-exclusive (which itself began as a game for the Sega Saturn) which then got a sequel that was released on the Dreamcast and Xbox later on. Since then, fans have been waiting AGES for a resolution to the cliffhanger which slapped everyone in the face at the end of Shenmue 2.

Sadly, the series -- despite having massive developmental budgets at the time -- failed to recoup costs with sales, and Sega corporate decided to ice the series indefinitely after Shenmue 2. The games got critical acclaim, and despite having a cult following, didn't perform well in sales regardless of region.

Sega tried one last time to gain more sales by bringing Shenmue 2 to the Xbox in 2002, but the game once again sold poorly. The fact that the Dreamcast itself died a year earlier didn't help anything. The games were both truly just ahead of their time. Dreamcast adopters couldn't wrap their heads around the games' ambitious gameplay designs and massive scope, and the lack of success of the first game meant the second game had no hype via marketing or word-of-mouth when it launched, dooming the sequel to failure.

There have been several spin-off games for mobile devices and even an ill-fated MMO for the game released over the years, but not true sequel to Shenmue 2 yet.

For the person who hit disagree and the others to come. http://en.wikipedia.org/wik... and http://en.wikipedia.org/wik... (SEGA/XBOX) Those are the only consoles the series has been on. Anyway I hope to see this game on ALL systems because it's a great series.

DigitalRaptor  +   157d ago
@ Belking.

Awww, you sound pretty insecure about that happening. The amount of butthurt from Xbox fans if this became a PS4 exclusive would be unprecedented. God knows, if Shenmue III was an Xbone exclusive, I would be sooo damn butthurt myself, it's not even funny. So let's not pretend.

The Last Guardian is still in production, they wouldn't keep sinking money into a project that was never going to come out. It's a PS4 game. Agent is the only one that is probably on the back burner indefinitely, and will probably end up being multiplatform, unless that Sony-Rockstar deal ends up coming to fruition.

No, Shenmue is native Dreamcast glory. I think the Xbox version of Shenmue II was slightly enhanced graphically and you could take save screenshots using the in-game camera, but since it didn't have the Japanese voice acting, and you couldn't transfer your save data from the first game, it wasn't the best version by any stretch of the imagination.

It's so reassuring to see so much Shenmue love on here.

In response to your comment, yeah I have to agree. No other of the big 3 are doing this, besides Sony. We already know Cerny and Yu Suzuki are good friends: http://www.neogaf.com/forum...

Suzuki knows that like-minded developers who appreciate his work like David Cage and countless others have a strong affiliation with PlayStation. http://www.youtube.com/watc...

If any platform is going to be the best option exclusively, it would be PS4, as that is projected to be the most popular and successful console on the market, and is already the most powerful console for a vision that is uncompromising. And Sega have already said that the only realistic way Shenmue would or could happen is if one of the console manufacturers were to fund its production. http://www.destructoid.com/...

Lmao!! Go dl a emulator! The problem is though that you will never feel what we felt when we first played the game, being spoiled by all these current and next gen games. Crazy thing though is that the graphics have aged pretty darn well for a game as old as shenmue and the game mechanics and how the game was shaped is immortal, so go give it a try I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
MoveTheGlow  +   157d ago
It's true. You might not really get why that game was so awesome for its time. The whole concept of an open world game wasn't that big back then, and it's known for its non-traditional gaming elements, such as working as a forklift operator or enjoying eating a snack, just as much as it's known for its story or graphics. It was surreal seeing so much detail put into stuff that most game devs would just hide or scrap.
Whitefox789  +   157d ago
Selling it a bit short mate :D

First game to have a dynamic weather system.

Game that had vocal tracks for any NPC character you could interact with on the street.

Able to play a video game within a video game: Space Harrier, Hang-On; (Ryu Ga Gotoku 5 has improved on this concept by allowing you to play Virtua Figher 2).
MoveTheGlow  +   150d ago
I know it's way late, but I totally agree - there's a laundry list of (game-wise) small stuff that makes it amazing like that, and it all hits us differently. Some of those things made it to newer games, and some of those things, like arcade games in a game, are fizzling out due to digital downloads being available.
DigitalRaptor  +   157d ago
Shenmue and its sequel were powerful and innovative beasts for their time, and nothing has come close to what was achieved in 2001/2002.

It had a superb and massive array of NPCs and a wonderful story; complex gameplay/world systems and mechanics; beautiful graphics, varied and stunningly detailed environments and and a curious art style. It opened my eyes to Japanese culture from a young age, and also to what games could achieve.

Non-traditional gameplay somehow made even mundane tasks like working at a gambling stand, driving a forklift shift or loading crates seem like fun. You could go to an arcade in the game, and play classic arcade games like Space Harrier and Outrun.

It's essentially an action, adventure, mystery, RPG, fighter rolled into one. I could go on and on, but I'll say that there is still nothing else like it out there like Shenmue in all its depth and beauty.

But even more poignant is that those Sega fans who blame Sony and hold resent for indirectly leading to the demise of the Dreamcast, would have to forgive Sony - bury the hatchet, because they would have saved the Dreamcast's crown jewel, directly.

Look at the signs - (I sourced this comment from Shenmue Dojo - http://www.shenmuedojo.net/... )

"FACT: Yu Suzuki has stated that he believes that Sega will allow him to make the game.

FACT: He said this in front of the lead architect for the PS4

FACT: Said lead architect and Yu Suzuki are good friends

FACT: Sega has mentioned in the past they would be open to leasing Shenmue for console exclusivity

FACT: Now Sony mentions this news we're reading now."

Just because it's a niche series, doesn't mean that Sega will mean to maximise their profits by ensuring it's multiplatform. Sega aren't going to finance it anyway - they just aren't. They're just sitting on it. It's obvious they want to support its most requested game series, but after those games helped sink the Dreamcast, I don't blame them, as it's understandably too risky for them to face alone.

Will any of these mainstream publishers support a game like Shenmue? EA, Activision, Bethesda, Ubisoft? Would they have helped finance it when it was being created? I highly, highly doubt it. Would Sony? Yes, they have already shown support and are very interested, as evidence shows.

If Sony manages to strike a comfortable deal, something that is in the best interests of both companies, as well as the fans who desperately, DESPERATELY want this and have been requesting it for over a decade - console exclusivity is not out of the question. Not at all.
