1080p vs. 720p: Does it Really Matter?

Karam Elahi from SpawnFirst writes: "Resolutions, resolutions, resolutions. The debates have been going on for a few years now, but they have never risen to the fever-pitched levels that this debate has reached these days, especially with the nigh-release of the new consoles. 1080p vs. 720p. These simple numbers have made fanboys in both the Xbox and PlayStation camps froth at the mouth and sling slander, profanities, and vitriol with reckless abandon. The height of these discussions are now reaching ridiculous proportions. I understand that there needs to be a healthy discussion about the consoles, but are we as gamers being too anal about specs, especially to the detriment of the industry and culture?"

Yes it does. And we're done here.

Abash1736d ago

Every time I play a PSN game that's 1080p native, I notice it automatically because it looks so sharp and clear. It makes a big difference to me, and 1080p retail games is part of the leap from last gen and what I expect from next gen consoles

GameNameFame1736d ago

Why would you not want better version of a game.

Good games with good graphics > Good games with bad graphics.

How do you make a case for murkier weaker graphics is better or same?

Kryptix1736d ago (Edited 1736d ago )

If it can output a better resolution then it has more power and that extra power can be used for more than just a resolution increase. Only blind people will deny it...

And trust me, 1080p native games look much sharper, if it didn't then why the upgrade? Why are all TV manufacturers making 1080p the common resolution for their TV screens?

If Xbox fanboys think 720p can look like 1080p, then 1080p must look like 1440p to them so that logic of both being even is really flawed. lol

nasnas761736d ago

If PS4 fanboys REALLY think resolution is be-all-end-all, then why aren't they on PC? Maybe it's because resolution isn't everything

MasterCornholio1736d ago (Edited 1736d ago )

I haven't played any PS4 games yet but I do watch direct feed 1080P videos of PS4 games on my monitor and they look amazing.

When it comes to consoles most people have a 1080P TV so why is it a bad thing to request that a next console is capable of playing games at that resolution. Also the PS4 being more powerful will lead to better performance in games which will affect gameplay.

I don't talk about which one is better. If you actually read the article, I say that 1080p IS better than 720p.

I was just talking about how much of a big deal we make about it these days. That's all.

Hicken1736d ago

It's being made into a big deal because there are people trying to say there's no difference. Obviously, there's a big difference, and it's indicative of the power disparity between the two consoles.

The article could have been titled better, for certain, as it gives the impression from the outset that you're going to make the argument that it DOESN'T really matter.

ZBlacktt1736d ago

$399 1080p vs $499 720p : Does it really matter?

Kayant1736d ago

This & add to the fact that most games are coming from third parties for both consoles so things like framerate & res matter has they can provide a better experience.

Boody-Bandit1736d ago (Edited 1736d ago )

Pay more for less. We have a winner! /s

1080p is significantly better than 720p.
Cleaner, sharper, better color separation, more detailed, less jaggies. Overall it's just a more visceral experience.

MasterCornholio1736d ago

But the power of the cloud will fix everything.

Mikelarry1736d ago

jay21736d ago

Yes, if a few games do 1080P this gen. ALL should without question next gen.

GribbleGrunger1736d ago

I bought a 1080p TV ... Yes, it matters.

Corpser1736d ago

How were you able to play sub 720p and sub 30 FPS ps3 games on your 1080p tv this whole time, if it matters?

GiggMan1736d ago (Edited 1736d ago )

The same way you're going to be playing your PS3, 360 and Xbox One games this gen... Duh.

xXxSeTTriPxXx1736d ago

Not much else to be said really.

MikeGdaGod1736d ago

agreed I have 1080p tvs and I want use them to their full abilities...especially when gaming.

the current generation was the first time we had HD so 720p was acceptable. next gen should be able to advance in graphics, gameplay, and resolution...otherwise...what& #39;s the point?
