If ‘GTA V’ Were a Movie, It Would’ve Sold Enough Tickets to Be the #453 Biggest Movie of All Time

If Grand Theft Auto V were a theatrically-released movie instead of a video game, enough people would have bought tickets to earn only $227.4 million at the global box office. That box office number would be just enough to make it only the #453 largest grossing film ever worldwide – just under The Green Hornet, The Heat, Mr. Bean’s Holiday and Space Jam. (Grand Theft Auto V, Industry, PC, PS3, Xbox 360)

This is a neat idea of an article. I like that the author thought out of the box with this piece. I'd like to see other games stacked up like this as well.

To be realistic though, you have to take into consideration the fact that if this was a movie, people would have gone to see it multiple times and not just purchased the game once.

If this was a movie there would have been a larger audience for it as well. There are lots of people who go and watch movies that are not into gaming.
FunkMacNasty  +   630d ago
Not just that, but he is counting single units as one ticket sale. So he's forgetting about households who may only buy one copy of the game but several people play it. When you go to the movies its different becuase each person seeing the movie must purchase a ticket.

^ Shsshh!!!
Phil Spencer can hear you and like the idea for games!

If GTA 5 (or any game for that matter - maybe TLOU excluded) were a movie, I wouldn't be interested in it to be honest.

@disagrees: Just to clarify, it's not because of the story of these games, I'm just not a movie fan :D

if GTA V made a movie Ray Liotta would be the perfect guy to play Michael. http://upload.wikimedia.org...

Billy Bob for Trevor (or actually the voice actor himself)

and Tyler Perry for Franklin?..or just to mess with people like hollywood loves to do...Christian Bale as Franklin.
Sci0n  +   630d ago
Yo I was thinking to myself billy bob for trevor too but just didn't say nothing lol. Tyler Perry for franklin, I don't know about that lol.

Shia Lebeoueuouf in blackface as Franklin. And Michael Bay as director. Best way to ruin something beautiful. :)
if gta5 were a movie, it's tickets would have sold for something around 8 dollars, wonder how much it would have sold then
KonsoruMasuta  +   630d ago
It would have sold exactly what the author said it would have. He did factor in the price of a movie ticket.

"29 million gamers bought GTAV, times that by the current movie ticket average of $7.84 a ticket (believe it or not, it is actually that low) equals a $227.4 million dollar gross at the box office."

oh, well there you go
Bundi  +   630d ago
I think he means how many people would have bought it at $8, not how much it would have made with 29 million sales.
CheexInk  +   630d ago
That's not factoring it in. Aside from the fact we're comparing a movie to a game, the lower price point would invite more sales. It kind of highlights how silly this hypothetical is though, ticket sales of a movie and boxes sold of a game just aren't comparable.

This would have been a terrible movie.

Jonah hill could play michaels son jimmy LOL. http://www.nndb.com/people/...
KonsoruMasuta  +   630d ago
I see a huge resemblance. He would have been perfect for the role.
FullmetalRoyale  +   630d ago
Well since he did the VO work for the character....

Nahhh it wouldn't work..

;)
Sci0n  +   630d ago

He didn't do the voice over for Jimmy. Danny Tamberelli did.

This whole idea is skewed. As many of you posted before gaming doesn't equal going to the movies. Anyone can go to the movies, only people with an Xbox 360 or PS3 would want to buy GTA 5. (unless you're weird and just buy it to sit on your shelf)

Movies are cheaper, households would have to buy multiple tickets not just one game, etc etc etc. This is all garbage.
Lykon  +   630d ago
yeah I wouldn't see GTA the movie.. Don't get me wrong I do love GTA games .. and actually I'm ok with Italian gangsters... I just can't tolerate black crime and attitude ... rap music etc. There is something really odious about it. It loud, superficial, grabbing, lacks something. I know it's only a part of the GTA games.
r3f1cul  +   630d ago
interesting to think about but as many have stated it has flaws... i.e multiple people playing the game as to one person buying a ticket etc still pretty cool to see someone break it down when comparing gaming to movies
