Activision sold more than $1 billion of Call of Duty: Ghosts into retailers on day one

Activision sold more than $1 billion of Call of Duty: Ghosts into retail stores worldwide as of day one, the publisher has announced.

Furthermore, Activision confirmed that on the Xbox 360 average player sessions for Ghosts have been longer than either Black Ops II or Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, during the same time period.

Call of Duty: Ghosts launched worldwide on November 5. (Call of Duty: Ghosts, PC, PS3, PS4, Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One)

Now go and fix this shit, Activision. We need the frame rate issue fixed on PS4 and Xbox One and the glitch-fest PC version should also be patched.
hesido  +   662d ago
Activision should lay aside 200-300 millions of it and start building a truly next-gen engine if they want to keep this pace.

They could still pump out another one with this engine while they are working on that new one.

Right because this doesn't get said every year for the last 8 years. I remember last year it was stated BF was going to destroy COD and then the year prior. Some of you should just put up a chalk board for all this and scratch the ideas you keep claiming should be what every year like it was for the PS3 that insert whatever will save the PS3.

1$ billion to retailers.
Not customers.

It's important to know the difference.

If they do a new engine I hope it still includes co-op local multiplayer. That is the only reason why I'm getting the game eventually. I would love other splitscreen choices, but we live in a world where there aren't many...
JoGam  +   662d ago
They won't. Why? Because you guys keeps buying that bullshit. If I made a sub par hd game that sold 1 billion dollars I wouldn't care to put effort in to anything else.
bakasora  +   662d ago
That's sad news.
mikeslemonade  +   662d ago
1. They certainly won't sell out right away.

2. Battlefield isn't the answer to COD. They are starting turn into a milk-fest too, and I'm already tired of them.

There needs to be a new emerging shooter or a completely new genre. Madden and GTA were non-shooters and led the industry.
Lisica  +   662d ago
Why would they do that?

They earned $1 billion with an old engine.
Why waste money when the kids do not see the difference.
hesido  +   662d ago
@Lisica: They would do that to keep their userbase. COD used to be the pinnacle of fluid FPS gameplay at 60fps in the now-old gen, and Battlefield couldn't touch it in terms of responsiveness, there's only so many frames you can pump out when you have as ambitious goals as BF. No other FPS could hold a candle to COD in that regard as well.

Now people will be able to get their 60fps fluid FPS gameplay fix from other titles as well, Titanfall, Killzone, Battlefield, they all do 60fps MP, and if the latest reviews are anything to go by, they do it more consistently than COD can.

This may not de-crown COD saleswise, but Activision wouldn't want lesser sales and get burned by the end of the next generation, they have to be ready with an engine that makes better use of next gen hardware.

Such misleading title... I hate when companies do this... It doesn't matter how many you sold to the retailers, you could have sold billions to retailers, but the result could have only been a few thousand sold...
bornsinner  +   661d ago
they lost the main devs who made the engine so dont expect that to happen when crappy devs are just copy & pasting the game because they simply can't use the engine properly
Razmossis  +   662d ago
Anyone else think this is a lie?
Not enough time has passed for stats to be collected by retailers and compiled by Activision.
There is literally nobody on my friendlist playing the game, compared to like 15-20 people playing GTAV one its day 1.
And look at the hottest games list on the N4G homepage, it's 2nd behind BF4.

This is a lie to keep share holders happy.

its not a lie its just cleverly worded. basically they shipped 1 billion worth of CoD to retailers. I know this is only one store but my local walmart sold only 40 copies across all platforms by 8 am yesterday compared to over 150 copies of Black ops II during its midnight launch.
raWfodog  +   662d ago
It's not a lie but it does keep shareholders happy. Selling the games to the retailers is money in the bank for Activision. Now the stores have to recoup their money from the consumers.

I believe they shipped $1 billion dollars worth of COD to retailers but I know they haven't sold that much.
I happened to be at Walmart last night and noticed their cases still fully stocked with copies of the standard game and hardened editions.
They wont be taking any records back from GTA5 any time soon.
onyoursistersback  +   662d ago
So, did they take R* crown for sales record or not...???
KYU2130  +   662d ago
your answer is no. The Distinction or retailer purchase and customer purchase is what has currently halted that. GTA5 was for sales to customers. CoD is for what as sold to retailers.

this is a very big difference. when it comes to record breaking.

If that is seriously the ending, COD has got substantially worse and copy/paste since I gave the franchise up 2 days into Black Ops 1.

yeah, it's the ending of MW2, but they re-used the same scene in Ghosts (earlier in the game, like you said). Probably not uncommon,in the industry but they didn't do a very good job hiding it, lol

Thanks Neonridr,

Yeah its definitely copy pasted. I think it would have been worse if it was the ending.

But yeah well said at the probably not uncommon/devs just good at hiding it comment.
BISHOP-BRASIL  +   662d ago
Devs re-use assets all the time, but to this similitarity level? I don't think I ever saw that anywhere else before.

I mean, other may do even worse on quantity of stuff reused, look at Assassin's Creed for example, you see the same objects, buildings and textures all around on multiple games. But at least they rearrenge stuff, design new maps, new situations where you spot the same stuff... But hey, a brick is a brick, a wooden crate is a wooden crate, there's really no point to remake every minor detail if they'll just come out looking like the same stuff.

Now re-using so much (character setting, animations, even models look like they were only slightly updated) from a cutscene sequence like that? It talks volumes on IW creativity.
Wikkid666  +   662d ago

Welshy  +   662d ago
Not that I'm excusing FIFA for it's full retail yearly releases, but that's a different ball game (pun intended).

FIFA's goal is a relatively realistic game to emulate what you see on TV, where as COD could could entire change genre let alone setting or tone. COD has the freedom to use rainbow launchers and interactive unicorns with the next sequel if they want, which is exactly mine and many other peoples issues.

They have both the creative talent and budget but just spit out the same game, with the same guns and the same old issues on the same 10 year old engine every year.

Vote with your wallet people. Boycott this crap and THEN you will see change. If they still get paid, they could care less.
DeadRabbits  +   662d ago
Yeah I see your point :)
carlingtat  +   662d ago
While I understand what you mean by Fifa in the yearly releases and not that much change, Fifa still change something compared to very very little change by COD. If you compare COD:Ghosts to COD4 very little has changed. However if you compare Fifa 14 to Fifa 2007 there has been a massive change in gameplay, game engine, game physics and even different game modes.
yezz  +   662d ago
Exactly! New season > new Fifa..

The last COD I enjoyed was the first Black Ops. After that they just lost the plot. All the games after BO have felt cold and bland. Not saying Black Ops was AMAZING but it was pretty good and still worth my money unlike these latest three..

Why does this rehashed garbage sells so much? And yet unique games like Wonderful 101 and Puppeteer sells a lot less. The gaming industry is all messed up.
ritsuka666  +   662d ago
They will never get my money.
grahf  +   662d ago
I'll clue you in on Wonderful 101... Not many people own a Wii U, and the casual folks who bought the Wii can't tell the difference or even know there is a difference. Those people wouldn't have bought Wonderful 101 anyway...

Its a shame, Big N got lucky with the Wii, but this time around being so far behind the technology curve and not branding properly has really backfired.
WeAreLegion  +   662d ago
Because the Wonderful 101 shouldn't be a $60 game. I enjoyed it, but no way should I have spent that much on it. Puppeteer released at $40. I'd say that's a better price point.
Ac7iVe  +   662d ago
I bought ghosts and wonderful 101 last night ;-) ghosts is cool better then black ops , a lot more customization
ShaunCameron  +   662d ago
But Puppeteer fared worse on the shelves than TW101. The lower launch price couldn't do anything for it.

Shadonic  +   662d ago
so true it even looks better than Ghosts Pc and next gen versions.
raWfodog  +   662d ago
Nah, not really. The difference is that Activision is reporting what they sold to the retailers only, not on how many consumers have bought the game. The GTAV $1 billion sold was what consumers bought from the retailers.
Snookies12  +   662d ago
It clearly says "sold into retailers on day one". That is not how many copies are sold to people. So no, GTA5 was not "pwned".

Retailers sell them to customers
JamieL  +   662d ago
Well that is the difference, but they are trying to put it out there like they beat GTA5 which isn't the case. I don't ever remember hearing this kind of report for a game release. It's always been how many games were sold to customers before, now that GTA5 spanked COD's ass they come up with this spin. I bet the fact it didn't even do black ops 2 numbers along with GTA5's new records that caused them to make up this report.

grahf  +   662d ago
There will hopefully be a shift next year when it goes next-gen exclusive. Pre-orders for BlOps2 were around 3.5 million, this year across 4 platforms they're barely over 2 million. Now, there are a bunch of retailers offering trade ins to get the next-gen version, but i'm not sure how many of the current gen CoDers are going to be upgrading next week.

Who knows. I rented it. It was OK. Hate 1/2 the maps. Pacing is slower. $2 well spent, thanks Redbox (and Obama!).
andibandit  +   662d ago
Its going exclusive????
grahf  +   661d ago
I meant when it abandons this current gen and development is exclusively for the Bone/PSFo (and PC!!!)

There are obvious tech limitations that they are self-imposing by having a similar experience across all platforms, and they're also using a thousand year old engine optimized for the current generation (and the last few as well...).

Frankly I'm not impressed with this year's iteration, but my hope is that in a years time we will have a better overall product.

I know, hoping for a new CoD engine is like hoping that the sun will be blue tomorrow (which is impossible).

There's now way they will pass GTA I went to midnight release for both GTA and Ghost at my local GameStop. For GTA there was about 250-300 ppl in line. For ghost there was only about 50-75 ppl. I know this is what they sold to retailers not customers and I think if activision did pass rockstar they would be bragging about it by now, but of course it does take time to get the numbers. We will see if they can beat it. Best of luck to to them.

Unfortunately this article is inaccurate. It's confirmed that Activision shipped $1 billion to retailers globally which is a huge difference than sell through which is the consumer. GTA V sell through was $800 million in its 1st 24 hours globally. Sell through #'s most likely will be reported by Activision later this week
