Digital Foundry- Face-Off: Battlefield 4

EG:Just what kind of graphical leap is the upcoming generation really bringing us? Of course, years lie ahead for studios to tap into the fullest potential of the PS4 and Xbox One, but right now, launch window titles like Battlefield 4 give us the clearest barometer of where technical progress is being made. A cutting edge shooter that presses the 360 and PS3 formats harder than most with sandbox-style maps and destruction physics, it's inevitable that the next generation versions deliver more than just resolution and frame-rate boosts. Indeed, the overhaul is remarkable at points, though DICE still plays to the older hardware's strengths to deliver impressive results. (Battlefield 4, PC, PS3, Xbox 360)

Once again the PS3 recomended over the xbox 360
ZodTheRipper  +   668d ago
Not surprising since most developers are pretty familiar with the PS3 by now.
FamilyGuy  +   668d ago
What are those lines appearing on the right side of the 360 video? Is that a df f up in video capturing or are those really on the 360 version? They're all along the right side of the above video, they streak out and it's most noticeable when they go over the gun.

the lines are to show when the 360 version is tearing, so whenever the game has any screen tearing the lines appear so its easy to see!

Also in the bars at the bottom you see lines to signify the screen tearing!

Its amazing that the PS3 version doesn't tear and still has a better frame rate!
Its one of my pet peeves with 360, the god awful screen tearing on most games is terrible!
PS3 first party games don't tear for the most part since they triple buffer them.
Either way the PS3 has come into its own the last few years for multi plats.

I have always preferred my PS3 over the 360!
Its just a shame most third party devs were lazy early on and so gave PS3 lazy ports!
Skyrim on PS3 was just criminal!!!

FamilyGuy  +   668d ago
Lol oh ok, that's funny, their lines are distracting me from the actual imperfection (screen tearing).

I don't watch enough of these to know they that, thanks LonDone +b for being Helpful
mewhy32  +   668d ago
Well this is to be expected. I mean the PS3 version of the BF3 was better too. Now that DICE has a grip on the CELL they are better able to take advantage of it's power and aid in the graphics functions. Xbox is weaker in the CPU area and can't really rely on these resources.
UltimateMaster  +   668d ago
There isn't much of a difference between them, unlike the PS4 Vs X1. Now you see a huge difference on third party games as well (Not just first party).
vigilante_man  +   667d ago
Oh dear. Wish I had not downloaded the XB1 and PS4 videos yesterday before watching this. Both look awful in comparison. It is also harder when both versions are on the screen at the same time.

I never noticed much difference here.

What surprised me was the huge difference between PS4 and XB1. It is very stark. I am used to 360 fans bragging about extra 2% performance boost or PS3 fans bragging about exclusives. The PS4 does stand out so much more.

But both XB1 and PS4 are worlds above the 360/PS3 versions.
koolaid251  +   668d ago
It took 6 1/2 years tho lmfao.

Whereas this time it took 6 1/2 seconds!!

Anyone notice input lag on ps3 or just me?

How can you see input lag if you can't see the controller?
angelsx  +   668d ago
AbeastNamed it's not just me professor.Check this http://m.youtube.com/watch?...
Ju  +   667d ago
Ha ha ha! You serious? Who ever made the video solves the "lag" by switching to 480p??? Wow...what a joker. LOL
wishingW3L  +   667d ago
most likely the Vsync's the one causing the input lag.
Ju  +   667d ago
First...I can't notice it...an what causes it, is the additional frame which comes with using triple buffering. So, latency is 1/3rd higher than double buffering. About 30ms. Nothing what you can do about it unless the game can predict input 60ms in advance.

Do explain to the professor how he was supposed to know that you were talking about a completely unrelated video...
ALLWRONG  +   667d ago
"Once again" Don't you mean finally? Because most multiplats have looked better on the 360 this entire gen.
mrmarx  +   667d ago
if only the 360 had cloud power
aquamala  +   667d ago
Yes if you ignore the other platform that's also part of this faceoff
FunkMacNasty  +   667d ago
Regardless of which console flag people wnat to fly, if we're arguing about which CURRENT GEN conlsole BF4 looks better on, you're all grasping at straws.

BF4 looks like a dried turd on the ps3 and 360, simply put. I'm not all that upset about it, because Battlefield has been my prefered online shooter this gen, but graphically speaking it looks like a launch title, graphically.

It would make more sense to compare the ps4/XB1 versions where there is a clear resolution difference.

There's no one-upsmanship to be accomplished comparing the current gen console versions of BF4 -- it's like saying "my awful looking turd looks better than your awful looking turd"

After Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider and GTA V comes Battlefield 4 recommended on PS3 :D

Best year for PS3 indeed.

Except that GTA V performs better on Xbox 360.
DeadManV  +   668d ago
What shit are you smoking?
Agent2009  +   668d ago
Fanboys being fanboys, I reckon.

From the Eurogamer article: "The 360 does command a minor advantage in frame-rate during synchronised play".

But I guess it's easier to simply bash my post, all because I'm stating a fact that's denying the advantage of a PlayStation console. Right?
Ezz2013  +   668d ago
"""Fanboys being fanboys, I reckon."""

true you are shown how being a fanboy can blind you from the truth

""The 360 does command a minor advantage in frame-rate during synchronised play, but for shoot-outs and high-speed hurtles down the city streets, the PS3 can sometimes pull ahead in these metrics - though the difference is rarely perceptible either way. Since all else is identical across the board, the PS3 version is recommended on the grounds of image quality if you have the option""

***the PS3 can sometimes pull ahead in these metrics - though the difference is rarely perceptible either way. Since all else is identical across the board, the PS3 version is recommended on the grounds of image quality if you have the option***
Skips  +   668d ago
lmao! Agent2009 just got owned. XD

According to Digital Foundry. There are just more advantages when it comes to the PS3 version than just a slight "minor advantage in framerate".

"it's apparent that the PS3 version has an undeniable advantage in one area: even to the naked eye, ground textures on 360 are blurred as a result of what appears to be unoptimised asset streaming. Glitch or not, this basically amounts to concrete and grass textures appearing fuzzier beneath the feet of Trevor, Michael or Franklin, while the PS3 version's remain crystal clear."

"but for shoot-outs and high-speed hurtles down the city streets, the PS3 can sometimes pull ahead in these metrics - though the difference is rarely perceptible either way."

"the PS3 version is recommended on the grounds of image quality if you have the option"

"It's close, but PlayStation 3 is our preferred platform for this game."
starchild  +   667d ago
Guys, he said GTAV "performs better" on the 360 which refers to frame rate and is backed up by the Digital Foundry analysis you guys are quoting. He didn't say 'looks' better.

"The 360 does command a minor advantage in frame-rate during synchronised play".

What he said was technically correct.
MysticStrummer  +   667d ago
Wow Agent. Calling someone a fanboy, then resorting to selective quotes and having the nerve to make a sarcastic comment about facts. Classic.
FamilyGuy  +   668d ago
Didn't the 360 version have extra frills on the palm trees in GTA 5? PS3 won that?

Haven't really been following that game as far as performance and visual comparisons go but I do recall the PS3 version was missing some small stuff in a couple screen shots.
DarkLordMalik  +   668d ago
PS3 wasn't missing anything. Just the palm trees were of slightly lower quality on PS3 but its not like you will be notice that much. Digital Foundry gave the nod to PS3 in the end.
Software_Lover  +   668d ago
You guys/gals can see a difference between the two versions?
MasterCornholio  +   668d ago
Theres barely any difference between these two versions. On the other hand theres more difference between the XBOX One and PS4 version especially when it comes to the sharpness of the image and the jaggies.
pixlz  +   668d ago
aside from minor lighting differences i see, the frame rate holds just a little steadier on the PS3.

Really though, if you have both systems and are playing multiplayer, is there any doubt people will get the 360 version?
Cross Game Chat is the winner for this generation. Has nothing to do with visuals.

Next Gen on the other hand...
MasterCornholio  +   668d ago
I completely agree with you. Between current gen systems there´s barely any difference however between the XBOX One version and the PS4 version there´s a bigger difference.

are they using the HD packs? That looks horrible
BTBuck1  +   668d ago
that 360 version is stuttering like an epileptic
Hufandpuf  +   668d ago
I honestly see no difference.
nthstew  +   668d ago
recently completed battlefield 4 on my pc on ultra settings
60 fps and it is a huge leap from battlefield 3 and the single player campaign felt really good this time around..
and multiplayer is huge.. I recommend BF4 over COD-Ghost..
starchild  +   667d ago
Yeah, it really does look a lot better than BF3.

I'm playing at mostly ultra settings at a solid 60fps and it looks fantastic. Definitely better than the PS4 or XB1 versions.

It's crazy how far ahead the PC is at the start of the generation. Imagine how far ahead its going to be down the line.
GreenRanger  +   668d ago
Little to no difference between the PS3 and 360 versions.
ELCUCO  +   668d ago
Soo.. looks like 360 glory days are over and the PS3 still kicking
DoesUs  +   668d ago
Very similar...bar the extra frames and zero screen tear on the PS3. Screen tear rife on 360.
Gondee  +   668d ago
Almost identical, just little differences. End of generation anyway, hold out for next gen, especially if you the kind of person who watches these videos...
bleedsoe9mm  +   668d ago
everyone should remember that during the last generation launch ps3 games ran like crap and it obviously had nothing to do with the systems power , same issue with this launch even if the ps4 is slightly more powerful .
Ju  +   667d ago
Except the PS3 had the advantage on paper but it took developers longer to harness the extra power (I'd count the no tear as a minor sign here). With the next gen it ain't so.
bleedsoe9mm  +   667d ago
@ Ju "on paper" is only that , get a more reliable picture when the machine are in the wild and independently tested . if you remember there was allot of hot bs flying around during last gen including cell's in different appliances being used for gaming . as we get more evidence the truth will become clearer , no matter what the final verdict turns out to be .
Ju  +   667d ago
We already have a clear picture. These data are speaking for themselves. This time the distance is so big, that no matter what, no optimization can compensate for the lack of raw numbers.
bleedsoe9mm  +   667d ago
@lu lack of theoretical numbers , i agree there is the beginnings of circumstantial case , nothing more until these consoles are in the wild . allot of other factors goes into a consoles success .
#10.1.4 (Edited 667d ago ) | Agree(0) | Disagree(1) | Report
Ju  +   667d ago
These numbers are not circumstantial (we are not in court) but raw spec values these chips are built against and leave no room for interpretation unless you work for MS marketing department. A straight line is a straight line. There is no room for interpretation.

god that screen tearing on the 360 is awful. The lines are super distracting.
Unknown  +   667d ago
The xbox 360 has better detail just like it's big brother.
neoMAXMLC  +   667d ago
Agreed. I just love all that detailed screen tearing.
BobBelcher  +   667d ago
God, people are so ridiculous... The "________" is so much better than the other. Lol, yeah- oooookay. You've got your biased goggles on.
TruthInsider  +   667d ago
Maybe future faceoffs should be PC v PS4 and Boner v PS3 lol.

Bit unfair i know,

The PS3 has more 1080p games ha ha!
Jamaicangmr  +   667d ago
So very many screen tears on the X360 oh my.
OMEGAXS1  +   667d ago
dunno if its a saving issue or what but every time I go to play the campaigne it makes me start the game over. I turn it on and i have to adjust the screen again & start a new game. Its happened three times :(
