An Examination of Looting in Bioshock Infinite and The Last of Us

Hardcore Gamer: Now that months have gone by since both games were released, we take a thorough look at the looting mechanics in both games, unimpeded by hype. Naughty Dog designed a system from the ground up for The Last of Us to serve the game, its story, world and overall design. Irrational, on the other hand, simply stuck with a system that made sense and worked for past games in the Bioshock series without changing it to serve Bioshock Infinite in particular, which is in many ways a very different game than the original Bioshock. (BioShock: Infinite, PC, PS3, The Last Of Us, Xbox 360)

Umm why are things games compared. Bioshock has some RPG elements but it is more on a action side. Why not keep it at that.

Its like comparing the loots from Diablo with these games.

In Infinite I thought it was a pain and a bit silly to raid all the garbage cans around me for food and ammo. If you're going to put so much effort into crafting an original story then think up better ways to get health and loot that don't involve looking in every garbage can like a hobo. It also takes away from the flow of the story a bit when you have to keep stopping to say Hey i gotta look in all these trash cans and desks and cabinets and scour every new environment.

Well at least it's not as bad as Mass Effect. There we have a government agency spending vast sums of money to get the mission under way, yet you still need to scrounge around for money for weapon and armor upgrades. That extra money would be a rounding error as compared to the entire budget.

Ha, very true, that felt weird too. There has to be a better way to integrate picking up items that goes with the story rather than takes you out of it.

To the couple of disagrees, you want to pick food out of trash? Booker should look for bananas and cake in garbage cans? Ok lol
