Final Fantasy: Dying or Revitalizing?

Discussing Square Enix's comments on how to keep its flagship franchise, Final Fantasy, relevant in a changing industry. (Final Fantasy XIII, Industry, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, Square Enix)

Dead with FF12, though its failing started to show with FF7.

At one time Square might have been about telling a story through a game, but as the tools and systems became both better and more complex they became worse and worse at both telling a story and using game mechanics to do it.

I think Square Enix needs to slow down in making Final Fantasy (exception of XV because that was ridiculous) games and focus on creating other titles for a while instead. Invest less money in creating other RPG's so gamers won't grow tired of the series too quickly especially in the highly volatile audience we have today. That was the "secret" of the last Squaresoft which made it so successful. If they create console games that are quality under the hood without targeting unholy numbers, I think there would be less people worrying about the stability of their favourite franchises.

Yeah, what about a new Star Ocean, Valkyrie Profile or Mana game? Those series are all good and yet left behind. :/

I think it died with X. I liked X-2 (guilty pleasure) and FFXII but I felt that things were starting to go downwards. It just didn't feel the same anymore. Actually I have yet to beat twelve and I bought it close to launch day. I think Square Enix needs to let it disappear for awhile and think about what fans really want.
