Sony's Shuhei Yoshida confirms voice commands for games on PS4 is up to developers.
Makes sense actually.
After reading the page with the features.. Could you do the voice command without the camera? It sound like all you need is the headphone with the mic? Anyone have more info on this ? Thanks
Yes you can.
Holy shit really? WOW that's actually really awesome...I was going to get a PS Eye camera down the line for my younger brother who would enjoy it, but knowing that I can still use voice commands without it is awesome.
I've been saying all along that Kinect is just an input device. All it's input features are facilitated by the software in the game or console OS itself. For the most part everything the Kinect does can be done with a $5 webcam and a cheap $2 microphone. The Kinect can process some information, but it just passes it along to the console to do something with it. The advantage of Kinect over a $5 webcam is that it can process transform information in real time so the software doesn't have to(not real-time), thus reducing lag.
Devs have said that themselves. Headsets are perfect for it.
lol at the pope pic.
Wasn't that obvious? Or did people expect every developer was going to have commands for everything you can do in a game? This just seems like what was already on PS3, and it felt like a gimmick. I used it once in Rainbow Six Vegas to see what it was like, then went back to using the controller to do the commands.
I hat e the idea of voice commands on games..I love the idea of voice commands for navigation.
I agree. It just seems gimmicky to me and does not add any extra immersion.
I've played with voice commands in SOCOM (PS2) and Endwar (PS3) and while accurate, they were slower and clunkier than with a controller. They may be great for a few niche games, but I'm yet to play or see anything with voice commands that actually benefited gameplay (you can get deeper immersion if you like talking at your game with 'em, but it's generally not as good a gameplay option). Having them mandatory, though, would be pretty wacky stuff.
Think i'd rather just press a button.
Obviously, voice commands are up to developers..the same is true on xbox... I wouldn't expect them to ever be common on ps4, or integral to a ps4 game, because there is no sign the attach rate will be high enough to justify the development time. Anyway, There's no reason to think that a large number of ps4 users would be interested in such features, when compared to xbox one users, who are knowingly paying $100 more for Kinect.
Attach rate= 100% Why? Because Voice commands can be done with the included headset. You don't need a camera to do voice commands. Nexus 7 2013
No you don't need a camera to do voice commands, but Kinect2 is more than just a camera. It's a dedicated audio processor. It's a high end noise cancellation tech. It's built in voice recognition software, with localized dialect and accent support. If a developer is to implement voice control in a ps4 game, they'll have to design software by themselves that does all the things I've just mentioned. Then they'll have to do even more leg work to make it work well for everyone in all supported regions. That's a lot of work to do for a feature that their audience probably has little interest in. Comparatively, there's less work to be done to get it working on xbox one, AND the audience is much more likely to be interested in the feature (based on the idea people would likely only pay extra for something they intend to use) It's about resource management. sure the ps4 comes with a headset. But how many people plan on wearing it during all of their gaming sessions (on or offline) vs xbox users who will keep their Kinect plugged in? These are the kinds of things developers have to think about when allocating resources to these types of features. No doubt ps4 can support voice commands, I just wouldn't expect to see much of it unless ps4 users show a lot more interest in it.
Does anyone remember the old PS2 survival horror game Lifeline?
I see this as a good thing thanks to the Xbox one. PS4 gains another option for those who want it.
That pretty much means no. Sony knows that. It's the same answer they gave with ps3. Devs aren't gonna write their own code. Don't expect many games to support voice on ps4.
PS3 SDK has voice recognition. Singstar had Voice control BEFORE Kinect existed, PSEye had 4 way , noise cancelling mics BEFORE Kinect existed and PS3 has had 5 way video chat since BEFORE Kinect existed. Stop believing the bull
Good, I'm glad.
