Who won the last Console War?

The next-gen console war is set to begin in earnest this November, when the first PlayStation 4 goes on sale in the US. With that fight about to begin, it still needs to be determined who won the last console war. MWEB GameZone's columnist takes a stab at answering that question. (PS3, Wii, Xbox 360)

I'd say Sony. Here's why:

Nintendo and Microsoft had a whole year's headstart. But Wii faded in the end, and There are about the same, or more PS3s sold than Xbox 360....

That is after PS3 launched one year later than Xbox 360, costed hundreds of dollars more, and was extremely hard to find in its early days.

Now, at the end of this gen, PS3 has the best exclusives, a great online component, over 80 million sold worldwide, and PlayStation Plus.

That is a very good point. If both consoles were released today, in their current states, I would be all over that PS3.

But it doesnt change the fact that, overall, I believe the Xbox 360 had a greater impact on gaming as a whole.

I agree. Ps3 did barely win, but the
Xbox did make a greater impact .. in north america.

Ms also made more money on xbox than sony did on ps3.

But ps3 is of greater value than a xbox in most aspects.

Great read and i agree with the author. The Wii just kinda fell by the wayside - if you have to compare it with the Xbox360 7 PS3.

Can't say for sure who won, but I can tell you that Nintendo Wii indisputably lost.

Purely on sales
as of now it is the Wii, but the PS3 is no where near to the end of its life cycle and could overtake the Wii eventually. Plus the complete downfall of the Wii at the end of its life doesn't suggest a win. So I'd say the verdict is still not confirmed

Ps3 will win it. Still the only console getting massive support ,from GOTY contenders like TLOU and upcoming games like GT6 its easy to see why sony is the winner

If you think there was a "war", you lost.

Any competition can be called a war, even if it's just a war of opposing wills.

That said, the war isn't over yet. Xbox fans would like you to believe it is: they'd rather the Wii won, and then tack on the added definition of winning in increased market share so they can say the 360 beat out the PS3.

But, when it's all said and done, it's likely that the PS3 will be on top. I could go on and on about more diverse library and such, but I'll just stick with the original terms for victory: sales.

It's not really a war, war's end, this is just a never ending feud.

With Sony continuing to support PS3 with new games, free online and PSplus....well from a PlayStation viewpoint its a moot point.

"But when I think about which of the two has had a great lasting impact on gaming, then I have to give it to the Xbox 360"

^BS at it's finest. Meaning: The 360 could've sold only 5 million compared to the PS3's 80 million. But it's the impact that matters most ......... GTFO!

Hicken is 100% correct.

"Winner" in this case has always been sales. Not marketshare. Not impact on gaming. Not support (consoles sold, not games). If impact was the deciding factor. how come no one (in this media) considers the Dreamcast the "winner" of that generation?

Now, with all that said. There is no winner. Why? This generation isn't over yet.

How bout we wait and see til the last console of this gen is sold. (but that wouldn't sit right with some peoples agendas i.e. moving goalpost)
