A $40 demo? A review of Gran Turismo 5: Prologue (Ars Technica)

Via Ars Technica: "Gran Turismo 5: Prologue features 70 vehicles. Six tracks. Online play. On paper, it looks like a robust experience; supporters of the game bristle when it's called a demo on message boards. Having played the game for the past few days I can tell you... it's a demo. I wanted to avoid calling it that, and I didn't think that criticism was fair when it was being leveled against the $40 release, but after spending a significant amount of time racing around the game's six tracks and collecting those cars, a demo is exactly what this is."

this is not a demo they made a demo of prologue and they will make a demo for GT5.

Plus the game is that ace I would part with £50 (real price £25)for it plus theres more to come with the update that comes this fall.

check my profile
ive got pgr4 and lets face it there's more cars on GT5P than pgr4 with out car packs.

The same content as the full game and was made to advertise the game. AKA its a smaller version of the full game to give you taste of the full game before release. AKA A DEMO!

I don't care how good a score you give this demo if they don't give you discount off the full game after buying it then I wouldn't buy it. Why? Simple when you go to buy the full game for $60 you will be rebuying content you already paid $40 for by buying the demo. Of all the crap people say about Microsoft screwing people over its nothing compared to this.

Take some good advice instead of buying a $40 demo go spend an extra $20 or buy GTA4, MGS4, or even GRID. Because this demo is a rip off.

Sigh this is just stupid. There is a difference between a demo and a prologue and cateogorizing GT5Prologue as a demo is narrow minded.

I don't see why it is bothering some people so much. If you don't feel its worth the 40 dollar price point then don't buy. No one is forcing you to purchase it so move the fvk on. It will probably reach the 1million sold point in a couple of weeks in EU so thats pretty impressive for an ordinary demo.

@fordgtguy Assuming GT ships with 700 cars which i expect will be more let us say they take out those 70 cars and leave me with 630. That is still more than forza and more than other racing games so what is your point. I can sympathize with prologue being over priced in comparison to GT5 but even with its price tag, it is still better than most other racing games. The 40 bucks i pay for it today won't have ANY effect on me over a yr from now. If GT5 was coming in a couple of months then your argument makes sense. Simply put GT5 is not a must buy for anyone but for those who don't feel like waiting.

tweaker3713d ago

I bet if the game had a different name/title people wouldn't be calling it a demo.

Dannagar3713d ago (Edited 3713d ago )

I've never been A Gran Turismo fan but I do want to bring up this point, I remember buying Sega Rally for the Saturn. It had 2 cars and 3 tracks. It was the same with many other arcade ports. Daytona only had one car and 4 tracks. 70 cars and 6 tracks isn't a bad deal.

kapedkrusader3713d ago

When GT5 comes out, you can sell Prologue for like $20. More than enough people would buy it if they can't afford the full version. So in the end you got to play a "Huge Demo" of GT5 for a full year for just $20.

Tarasque3713d ago (Edited 3713d ago )

People can call it want they want. But my experience with it was very short lived. After beating A class in about 2-3 hours i really had no desire to even play it anymore. Sure i would like to check out the other car's, but that wasn't enough desire for me to keep playing. I tried a few races online and was having major lag issues or connection issues so i can not say anything about the online play. I am glad i got it from gamefly and didn't buy it. This is just soley my opinion, And if people keep playing and having replay value to them then it might be worth the 40 bucks. I think 30 bucks would have been a sweet spot though.

wow4u3713d ago

"OMG! this is not a demo"

I think I'll trust ArsTechnica over the opinion of a random n4g user.

GT5P is a demo, without a doubt, and one of the most neutral and respected technology sites on the web just told you so.

dan-boy3713d ago

but whatever way you turn it, your still gonna be paying twice for some of the content! and i can't help but feel that sony wanted gt in some form in the marketplace in 08.... and prologue is what you got!sony are the publishers aswell. obviously it does help them "tweak" things before next-years release, but surely they don't need to put out a section of the game for retail to do that?!

deeznuts3713d ago

N4user, I trust Arstech a lot, but don't trust Ben Kuchera one bit when it comes to Sony products. Frank Caron is the unbiased reviewer there. Read any of his sony stories and the comments, you will see.

Oh did you know, when Ars wrote an article about Sony's divx capabilities on the PS3, the author interally titled the article, "Sony's Divx solution sucks!" not thinking visitors could see it, but those with an RSS feed (or similar) could see it?

As I said, only Frank Caron is the unbiased video game person over there.

solidt123713d ago

To me this game feels more like a game that is about 70% complete vs a demo. It is worth the $40. It is the best racing game I have ever played and it even isn't completed yet. GT 5 will rule all for a long time.

You can't play your friends online which sucks, I hope you will be able to when the full version comes out.

sonarus3713d ago

Yea i am pretty sure you will. With where they are now by releasing this prologue, they have essentially bought themselves more time to stick some features in there such as custom paint jobs, car auctioning, and better online service. The game will be great without a doubt. Plus there is supposed to be a fall update that improves online and adds damage in time for the full release

is what dreams are all about

PimpHandHappy3713d ago

because if he did he would understand what Prolouge means

butterfinger3713d ago

There is a reason why it says prologue and a reason why it is significantly cheaper than a full game. It still delivers a great deal of fun and good playing time. I can play online for hours:)

Leathersoup3713d ago

I guess you don't understand English, because if you did you'd understand that Prolouge is not a word.

lodossrage3713d ago

Ok, you obviously want to start an argument with that comment.

Common sense tells you it was a typo. No need to start trying to insult people's intellect. I'm pretty sure you've made plenty of typos too. We all have.

Hey Leathersoup, try picking up a book from time to time.

You know that bit at the beginning that establishes character or setting but is just abut shorter than a full chapter?

Guess what they call it.

Or to dumb is down for you a bit, its like the first scene in a movie where the good guys wife dies in the first 5 minutes and we know then why hes such a troubled soul.

only sony fools fall for this type of ploy £60 demo lol and they love the disapointment after dissapointment ad i found this on the net i think u ps3 fans would liek it

In MGS4 “the player takes on the role of an aging soldier, Snake who can be armed with knives, guns and grenades,” comments the BBFC. “During battles enemy soldiers die with small puffs of blood. The weaponry includes petrol bombs, however there is no detailed portrayal of injuries. During cut scenes slightly more detailed violence is portrayed, such as enemy creatures spearing friendly soldiers and one protracted fist fight.”

The go on “Violence may be strong but may not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. It is possible for the player to progress stealthily through the game, avoiding violent confrontations where possible. The game also features one use of strong language and references to suicide and an implied child rape.”

How old are you poos3..10?

Where is it £60 for GT5p? Its only £20 and some places its £17.
So get your facts right.

Geez, does ya mommy know your playing on her computer and talking such utter rubbish 100% of the time?
I'd get off it quick before she spanks you for being a naughty little child.
