This Generation's Best Final Fantasys Weren't Named “Final Fantasy”

This console generation saw only a few Final Fantasy games during its time in the sun but luckily two of them were amazing. Of course, I am not talking about Final Fantasy XIV—decent as it is after its relaunch—or any of the Final Fantasy XIIIs. No, I'm talking about Lost Odyssey and The Last Story.

I also like a little gem called Resonance of Fate. It had a lot of flaws but the combat was awesome and the characters were great.

That game deserves a sequel just so they can tighten the flaws of the forst game.

If I knew what was going on I would have played it more

Resonance of Fate indeed, unfortunately I haven't met a single person who was able to beat it.

Pintheshadows1699d ago

That is because it is pretty bloody hard.

CanadianTurtle1699d ago

It was an excellent game. The only major problem was the horrendous load times.

I really don't understand what was so great about Xenoblade.
The voice acting was awful, the graphics ugly and the story pretty lame in my opinion. I liked the combat though apart from everyone constantly shouting out their attack moves all the time. I also liked the open world style and freedom you had. Everything else though was very average.
I loved Resonance of Fate, thought it was terribly underrated. Only problem I had with it was that it was really hard.
Lost Odyssey was pretty good and one of the few JRPGs this gen worth a mention, but even that had its problems, long loading times, dodgey voice acting and so on.
All of the JRPGs this gen have been a far cry from the masterpieces we had last gen. They don't even compare. I realise i'm in the minority though and my opinion is an unpopular one haha.

Neither do I....I think people gave it the benefit of the doubt because at the time it was one of the only good Wii games coming out.

I have no idea what you're talking about, with the voice acting. I thought it was outstanding. The graphics were good, for non-HD. I also thought the story was very good...until the end, when MonolithSoft went all anti-God, as usual.

TheGreenMan1699d ago (Edited 1699d ago )

The story of Xenoblade was solid and the world the game took place in was among the best of any game, this gen or last.

Fair enough guys I'm glad you enjoyed it it just wasn't for me. I haven't enjoyed a JRPG since Final Fantasy X though and even that game was a little disappointing when compared to the PS1 era of JRPGs.

I really wish we would get a LO2 game. Oh wells ;(

For me, the best jRPG this gen hands down was Xenoblade.

Just got last story today. So good so far, was worried because heard a lot of complaints about the fighting mechanics but they seem pretty natural for the wii controller. Last odyssey was great, I remember playing that endlessly when it came out. Though the FFs were still great too dispite the entitled crybabies who never even touching the games. There were a lot of underrated JRPGs this gen, very few were disappointing. Hoping for more love for the genre next gen.

I can't think of too many JRPGs this generation and I can think of more that were disappointing than delivered. Also, it's kinda hard to find games disappointing since the hype around JRPGs this generation has been next to zero and to be honest that's not a result of unfair media treatment - The Western RPG has just eclipsed the JRPG in many ways. Square Enix most successful RPG (in the west) not named Final Fantasy this generation was Deus Ex - a western RPG.

Blue Dragon, The Last Remnant, and Front Mission, really come to mind as some big let downs from the JRPG folks.

Lost Odyssey and Valkyria Chronicles are some of the beacons of hope for the genre. But in my opinion as a gamer for 20+ years (I am 25.) The creativity and the time vested in story by JRPG makers isn't as evident in the JRPG games anymore. They are often cliche and uninspired stories. I'd even so far as say that Lost Odyssey experiences the same issues but was saved by the brilliant short stories that were integrated into the game which gave it real depth and inspired the imagination.

Yeah I agree with everything you said.
It's all a bit been there done that and it was much better before during the PS1-PS2 era.
I am also 25 just for the record.

Loved LO, still yet to play The Last Story fully, liked Xenoblade Chronicles and Resonance of Fate too. Been some pretty good RPG's across all formats this gen.
