Killzone: Shadow Fall's Texture Quality Has Quadrupled Since February

PushSquare writes: It’s been a while since we got a proper look at Killzone: Shadow Fall. The futuristic first-person shooter is undoubtedly the top-tier title in the PlayStation 4’s launch lineup, but outside of February’s big next generation coming out party, we haven’t actually seen much of the release. Guerrilla Games rectified that as part of a blowout on the latest episode of GameTrailers TV this week – and revealed a few interesting snippets in the process.

While Ryse textures have been halved; this is pretty telling.

Majin Uchiha1491d ago

You people never stop huh ? What does this article have to do with Ryse ? smh

Kryptix1491d ago (Edited 1491d ago )

It has more to do with Xbox only gamers always saying that Ryse is looking better than Killzone even though they're comparing it to a build from E3/Gamescom.

They both look good but if this is true then console gamers are in for a surprise once new gameplay comes out. Just like Ryse has better lighting with new screenshots, I wouldn't be surprised if the other games get shown with improved graphics at launch day.

Godmars2901491d ago

Obvious answer: Crytek recently lowered Ryse's polygon count since they first announced it.

This is an example of the opposite of that case. The expected instance of a dev improving upon graphical content. Not lessening it.

Also, haven't heard of Gorilla going into a production crunch to assure that a game's released on a specific date.

Section81491d ago

I know I don't like xbox but I gotta tell you, Ryse graphically looks really good.

Destrania1491d ago

The pre-rendered cutscenes do but not the actual game itself.

fghtrer3fb5erg1491d ago

I agree with you, this is about killzone shadow fall not ryse but people like to provokate lol.

toddybad1491d ago

Ryse's polygon count was reduced so the power could be used on other graphical effects. It wasn't an overall decease graphically, but an increase or at least a change in focus. Polygon count is pretty useless after a certain number of a human size character.

Just clearing that up, nothing really to do with KZ but people commenting on both for some bizarre reason. Not sure why you'd be comparing the two but there you go.

Shake_Zula1491d ago

Well, let's be fair here...

Polygon count and texture quality can be related, but they are inherently two different things. Comparing KZ's texture quality to Ryse's polygon count isn't necessarily 1 to 1.

Polygon count relates to GRAPHICAL quality sort of like pixels on a TV; more pixels (polygons in this case) means more detailed color space. Polygon count is more so a testament of how detailed a dynamic surface, like skin and clothes, can be.

Texture quality is typically regarded as a static feature. Textures in terms of gaming development are usually just pictures that sit in the game environment. So, four times the texture quality means four times clearer (or more technically, four times the size). Think roads, skies, foliage, etc.

Either way, this is still pretty impressive, and testament to how the 8GB GDDR5 RAM on tap makes graphical development a bit easier by being able to not worry about memory limits. No doubt, they probably maxed out the available RAM in the final development steps to make this happen, but the question is if it will run smoothly with 5-7 GB of RAM to constantly flush and load.

(I'll explain the process for the X1 as well if anyone wants to read it)

@Foliage 2 different goals, 2 different devs and 2 totally different ips.

Just because Killzone did this doesn't mean every single game should follow suit.

We're not the developers we're the gamers.

xHoii1491d ago

Quality. It's actually a treat seeing developers improve their game, rather than show us a trailer or some gameplay with great graphics, get us all hyped then a few months later shows us the newer version which is absolute crap.

I cant get my head around this anymore. And I have to wait until 29 November :-(

NarooN1491d ago

Is that your b-day? If so then we randomly share the same b-day, lol.

fOrlOnhOpe571491d ago

@NarooN
No, that's when it launches here in the UK and Europe. Happy Birthday when it lands, friend.

christrules00411491d ago

Or it's the PS4s release date for Europe. At least it isnt Japan having to wait till February though.

cellfluid1491d ago (Edited 1491d ago )

Four times the texture!! This is definitely well appreciated we would like to thank the staff at guerrilla games for pushing the bar for us gamers!! I'm happy I preorderd the killzone ps4 bundle..

brometheos1491d ago

The destruction they added to the game is superb as well. In the GTTV Video they showed how you can set C4 and blow down entire walls and take enemies by surprise. GG is really going all out with Shadow Fall. Can't wait for the 15th!

talhat21491d ago

This game is just getting better and better, it cant get any better can it? lol

chrissx1491d ago (Edited 1491d ago )
