Ginx:Sonic the Hedgehog was born running. Running; as fast as he could – all day, every day - chasing after Mario. Sega’s signature mascot was, from the very beginning, designed to be the rival and the antithesis of Nintendo’s. Mario was slow. Sonic was fast. Mario was square. Sonic was cool. Mario wore dungarees. Sonic wore nothing… but… shoes and… gloves. And, for a brief period in the early 90s, that was enough. Sonic did what no one else had ever done – he beat Mario. Everyone was happy – but then? Something went wrong. Pixels were passed over for polygons, and where Mario flourished, Sonic screeched to a halt. He missed a console generation, appearing in 3D for the first time 5 years later, in 1999 on the Dreamcast. From Sonic Adventure onwards, most would agree that there have been two Sonics. One was awesome and 2D, the other was 3D and a bit meh. 15 years later, it seems Sega have at last gone back to the drawing board, ready to redesign the idea of 3D Sonic…Ready? This is Sonic: Lost Word.
