James Pungello of VGU discusses why single player games adding online multiplayer is a good thing for games as a whole.
Because it gives more opportunity to 10 year old boys to be racist homophobes?
It is not always good. Sometimes it can take away from the single player experience.
I dont mind if the online multiplayer is separate from the campaign, especially if done right. What I do have an issue with is when the single-player and multiplayer are combined (described with euphemisms like "seamless" and "persistent", as with Ubisoft).
At least Demon / Dark souls did the constant right. I also think MindJack had an interesting take on the DS way, but they just couldn't get it right.
I guess this person never heard of the expression "Less is more". Sadly, there are a number of problems that can happen by over-saturating the market with multiplayer modes. 1) These are resources being wasted. I don't think anyone would argue that the resources used to make the online for Dead Space 2 or Lost Planet 3 could have been better spent on almost anything else. 2) Most online modes are a ticking bomb. Like if your game sold poorly (MindJack, NeverDead, Lost Planet 3, etc) or wasn't exactly amazing, then the online multiplayer will quickly dwindle. When I went to platinum Lost Planet 2, I vividly recall the first couple of fraction matches having something like 20,000 people actively trying to win. Come week 15 (like 4 months later), I recall being able to boost victories with 1 person. Yes, the online was so empty that me and a friend could control ranking on a global scale. 3) They can detract from a otherwise good experience. MP is typically what you play last and it usually leaves a lasting impression. It's hard to say "Oh, you absolutely have to play BioShock! The art is amazing, the story is jaw dropping and everything is so perfect. Friend "What about the Multiplayer". "Well... it's okay. Not a lot of people are playing and can feel cheap at times." See? That note went from a great game, to an only okay one. This is true for a lot of games and several people suspect GTA Online was delayed to avoid it. These are just some examples, but there are plenty more. That is not to say all multiplayer is bad, but we see more negative examples than positive ones.
I just wish it weren't forced into games that don't need it at all. Bioshock 2 and Spec Ops The Line come to mind.
I can't wait for the shitstorm when Titanfall comes out... it'll be GTA: Online all over gain.
This guy obviously loves multiplayer. I don't think multiplayer is bad but it is not for all games to have
It's funny, I actually don't play much multiplayer (I mean I play it but I am always more interested in the story mode). I just think lots of games have done well to add it and overall these mp experiences are becoming more important to gaming so trying new ideas is a good thing. It doesn't always work out (obviously) but I'd rather see a game like Arkham Origins or Mass Effect 3 try it to see.
I see where you are coming from but games like Arkham Origins in my opinion just didn't need it that's not to say its gonna flop. At least they did it smart and put a separate team on that.
Right I think that's starting to become more prevalent, mp options are being made by a different studio and it keeps the single player basically untouched.
Hopefully future games will adopt this practice making MP a more noteworthy experience
