Sakurai v. Nintendo: The Old Franchise Problem

Did Masahiro Sakurai, director of the entire Super Smash Bros. franchise, just diss Mario, Zelda, and Pokémon?

In his weekly Famitsu column, Sakurai described his role at TGS, complaining that he had very little time to actually judge the games by playing them; rather, he and the other judges could only watch. The Game Designers’ Award is considered one of the most prestigious rewards given out at TGS, and Sakurai said that he wanted to give the reward to an original, indie-esque game rather than a heavily-milked AAA-title. Translated by various sources, Sakurai wrote the following... (3DS, Nintendo, Super Smash Bros., Wii U)

There is no problem with old franchises. People are trying to make them into a problem, though, because they resent the success Nintendo has with them.

I never see anyone minimalizing the success GTA,Gran Turismo, God of War, or Halo for being old franchises. Its always just Nintendo.

This article takes what Sakurai said and spins it far out of context.

I have not read the article, but if there is a problem with old nintendo franchises (maybe because of a lack of innovation or sth.) that would also apply to God of War and Halo.

God of War and Halo are both just as guilty of this. No one here is denying that, and it's often pointed out in reviews and discussions.

I just don't think that excuses Nintendo from sticking to the same franchises they introduced in the late 1900s.

None of those franchises you mentioned have been milked as much as Mario, Zelda, Pokemon.

* They need NEW IP with that Nintendo Art Style.

* Nintendo, give us some cool new ip that is a mixture between Mario 64 + RPG + Wind Waker = awesome.

Maybe a future setting, maybe a unique creative setting, but give us something else please.

I love Nintendo's characters, but most of them are from the late 80's/ early 90's.

YES PLEASE! that would be awesome.

Nintendo releases new I.P. every year. People just ignore them.

Just this year alone, they released the Wonderful 101, Dillon's Rolling Western, and Crashmo. There were few others in there as well.

I don't resent the "success" Nintendo has with old franchises. I entirely believe that after several decades with them, it's time to get into some new territory.

I also think that the games you mentioned are guilty of this.

Problem is a square doesnt fit into a triangle no matter how hard you push.
There hasn't been a 3d 4 player mario game, a mario kart that had as much short cutting or such lush graphics, or a smash bros that adds some thing new... yet there has been a big problem with japanese anime influencing their games.

Just give me a new metroid game nintendo and I will forgive you. Cause right now you are really a sinking ship to me at this point.
lilbroRx  +   777d ago
There sales just exploded over the last two weeks and they are sinking?
Dunban67  +   777d ago
Their sales predictably went up - no one thought they would do otherwise- they will continue to go p thru the holidays at least- having said that- Wii U sales are still very low and the Wii U is still not selling on a pace to reach close to 9 million for Nintendo s fiscal year- so the Wii U is still a sinking ship- the question is- will the upcoming sales be great enough to reverse this trend
just wait until early 2014-e3. ( shigeru miyamoto game, 2. X from monolith soft
3.super smash bros wii u 4. the legend of zelda wii u 5.mario kart 8) and this is just the stuff we know about.

Three of those are exactly what the article is talking about (milked Nintendo franchises) and the other is in danger of the same (the Xeno series).
The only reason nintendo can't focus on creating new ip's is because of horrible 3rd party support. nintendo doesn't have the luxury of creating new first party games that might not sell there system. unlike sony& microsoft, nintendo can't fall back on the blind faith of 3rd party developers & a steady stream of games until they release the there first party titles.
