Canadian site HardwareCanucks explore the possibility of constructing chords 2-Way CrossFireX graphics cards of the Radeon R9 280X (Tahiti XTL) and Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition (Tahiti XT2).These adapters have almost the same characteristics, except for the clock frequencies that are higher than the HD 7970 GE.
All currently available video card Radeon R9 280X is based on the old GPU AMD Tahiti XT2, while chip Tahiti XTL is still at the stage of laboratory testing and will be ready in November. He subsequently replace Tahiti XT2.

This isn't a big enough upgrade from my 670 GTX. Bring on the 290X or lower the price of the 780 GTX. I need to upgrade for 1440p :(
Id wait it out till next year if you can man nvidia is releasing there new stuff so it will be nice to compare at that stage
Initially my plan was to not upgrade and live off the PS4 but now that nextgen consoles can't even do 1080p consistently I'm starting to feel the upgrade itch again.

I've got 4k gaming dreams, and a couple of R9 290x cards would probably cope. I wont have the screen for year or 2, so I should really wait but the itch is hard to ignore :)
Agreed im craving to upgrade my gpu (560 ti!) ahah but im just gonna wait it out till next year no matter what

Minimum framerate is higher on 770 though, which is an important factor people often overlook.
Is it true that Radeon cards have higher maxes, but lower bottoms, making their frame rates more unstable??
The difference in min framerate is so minor its not a big deal at all. If it was off by like 20 frames, then yes. 3 on the other hand, not an issue
Minimum framerate is what stops a game from becoming jerky, it can make the difference between playable and unplayable.

No that is not true, it really depends on the game as some perform better on one or the other.
Im getting 50 fps on ultra in multiplayer in the beta on my 7000 series cards. So with new drivers that are going to come out with the game i shouldnt have to upgrade at all for this one.
PLus the Temperatures and Noise benchmarks are all better on the R9 280 vs. GTX770
The GTX 770 beats the R9 280 by 10 watts but that's better than past cards when AMD would lose by 40 or more.

I'm guessing those fps will increase with mantle being used. and early days driver wise.
The 280x is just a rebranded 7970, and the drivers are already pretty mature so don't expect any real bumps in performance you'd normally see with new hardware and early drivers.
However, here's hoping mantle delivers!

yeh new series are basicly overclocked rebranded 7000 series.
Whats good about all this is the price theyve seriously knocked down the price of both series cards.
However AMD are phaseing out the 7000 series For the R9s.
This obviously due to competition witch fine by me cos prices awsome.
Plz be aware these cards also on the r9s have dx11.2 ready but must run windows 8 and have next gen OPENGL.
