Sony's goal for '08: Outpace LCD market growth

Sony's got every other LCD manufacturer in its sights this year, taking the stage of Finetech Japan 2008 predicting sales of 108 million units globally, and, through investments and "technological differences", being in position to take the lion's share of them.

I don't remember, though I thought I heard something like that. Sony designs most of the tech, but Samsung manufactures the actual panels.

Someone correct me if i'm wrong here.

edit: also, if they want to capture the lion's share of the market, they need to bring their prices down a bit. I know that Sony has quality sets with amazing picture quality, but they are always at least 500-1000 more than a comparable-sized set from a rival company.

sony makes alot of parts used in samsung and sharp lcd's. and up untill december sony manufacured 12% of samsung lcd's

Sony's prices this year are coming down significantly to compete with other manufacturers (read Samsung). A 46w4000 set is going to sell for significantly less than last year's 40W3000.

You compare a Sony Bravia KBR4 or 5 picture to the Samsung, or any brand similar model and you tell me who wins hand down. I know personally because two months ago I paid the extra $500 for the KBR4 and not only is the picture better but it also picks up free HD channels and free HBOHD. The $500 bucks is well worth it.

I also think samsung got better picture

My friend's 55" Samsung DLP looks worse than my 50" Sony SXRD A3000, but that's because I know how to properly calibrate a set.

deeznuts3473d ago

They do cost more, and value might lie in Samsungs, but no way is the Samsung picture better than the Sony. Close, and very good, but not better.

Sony's black levels are the only ones good enough to challenge plasmas on this front (not beat it of course).

Bonsai12143473d ago

thats because sxrd is the best lcos tv out. i only got a a2000 :-(

thereapersson3473d ago

That's why I got the SXRD over the DLP. I did my research and didn't fall for the DLP hype when I knew there was something better out there. It's just a shame that stupid-ass Sony, out of all their "wonderful" business decisions, decided to discontinue production on them in favor of LCD technology.

Sony is bringing down the prices significantly this year to compete with Samsung. You will probably get a better Sony for the same price of the Samsung set. Sony needs to do this because their loosing money on the HDTV front.

This years lineup has been plagued with smearing of dark colors. Playing COD4 on a set can be a mess at times. Any quick movement will drag dark colors across the screen. Just checkout the AVSForum.com to see what I mean.

This year's line up is not out yet.

I know alot of people with HDTVs. Every thing from LCD, DLP, and plasmas. Every one comes to my house and notices that my picture is clearer than theres. I love the Sony XBR5 series.
