Beyond: Two Souls is out today, and its reviews are really mixed. Despite that, Yoshida confirmed on Twitter that he still has faith in Cage.
i love his style of creating games its like a movie makes sense it will get mixed reviews like a movie i will be picking up Beyond two souls.
What mixed reviews? I suppose you can call them mixed, and that's kind of what I expected from Cage's games, although when it comes to his types of games, scores don't tell the whole story
http://www.metacritic.com/g... the majority loved but some did'nt.
It's harsh how a game which is taking risks and trying something new gets mixed reviews yet the same old boring COD get near perfect scores every year. I think David Cage should try being more open with his next game though. I would love to see what they could do with an open world type experience or maybe an RPG I just find it weird that most criticize it for not being open but they gave Walking Dead by TT near perfect scores. It was the same with Heavy Rain, people criticized that but when WD came out the things they moaned at with HR were fine with WD
quanticdream dont make games you play but experiences you LIVE! give me more of these please..
Experiences you live? Wow, so much corn and cheese.
WTF is this? Dionysus - Quantic Dream, get a zero from for not releasing it on PC, hope your exclusivity deal was worth it. How is that allowed on Metacritic?
This Metacritic, judging/buying not buying a game based off of a number is just stupid. To see Madden and a remastered Ducktales game rated higher than a fresh new ip say's it all. Most of my fav games this gen have scored like crap. The video game sites need to rid themselves of the scoring stem and adopt a pro/con written review system, because that's all I want to know about a game that interest's me, not a number.
Another quote from a metacritic review: " Graphically you would have expected more at this late stage of hardware optimisation." REALLY??????? Beyond Two Souls gameplay screen (no spoilers) http://i.telegraph.co.uk/mu... Call of Duty Ghosts character model: http://static4.businessinsi... Agree = Beyond looks better Disagree = Ghosts looks better
The game play will differ from one person to another depending on what choice they make in the game.
It's interesting that only 2 critic reviews are actually negative. About a third of user reviews are negative, which seems rather questionable, as user reviews on the interwebz tend to be. Nontraditional games are going to tend to be more polarizing even if they are good. Reviews of some of the best movies from David Lynch tended to get follow a similar pattern. I've been pleased with all of Quantic Dream's games so far, so I do plan to pick this up eventually. The critics who liked it seemed to REALLY like it, which suggests to me it's worth giving a shot.
Gamespot 9 Game informer 7.8 Ign 6 Damn who to believe, I always look at gamespot as the most strict since hey nitpick the most I would love to know how many of these B2S reviewers reviews heavy rain, because the same person should have done it. Ign complains about controls yet the controls are almost the same as heavy rain with few improvements Anyway I am getting it to see for myself. Also thank you Sony for showing confidence in David cage, I still believe this game will sell 2 plus million
I just believe none . I wondered about the gameplay , the demo and feeds answered on those topics . Characters movement controls are actually better than with heavy rain , and no longer a sluggish pain fest , wich is most of what i wanted changed .
i love walking dead i love heavy rain and i love the style of those games we need something different when it comes to games who wants to play the same thing over and over again i don't thats why im buying Beyond two souls which i'm pretty sure i will love.
IGN: 6 Whaaaaa "By Lucy O'Brien" Oh....that explains it then
It seems that people decided to love this game before hand and they are damn well not going to change their opinion. I felt the same about heavy rain... then after a couple of hours of playing it I let go and admitted it was shit.
David I'm getting your game of course! Without you and other creative folks that bring us this kind of games we oldtimers would have a hard time trying to justify gaming to our wifes! :) Everybody just get the game and just don't complain about bad reviewers, that doesn't help David, getting the game does :)
Reviews are opinions. And games like these show that opinions can differ. This game is basically all story so it gets even more subjective. I mean things like controls can be measured with terms like accurate, responsive/unresponsive, slow, fluid, layout, complicated etc. Also graphics are pretty easy to judge (not the art style!), textures and stuff. But when it comes to fiction and story telling and character development these journalist are usually not trained in those fields (no offense) and that is a problem especially with story based interactive movie games like this one. Check out "Archengeia" on youtube if you are looking for good and in depth reviews of the story part of games! Hes a writer himself and knows his stuff :)
I honestly don't like this style of game at all, I can see why people might like it, but it is too limited for me. If I want to watch a movie I will heat up some popcorn and veg out on the couch and watch the thing.... I don't like to be critical because I generally love what Sony's 1st and second parties come up with... I just can't get into the "movie games" type of thing. I love games like The Last of Us and Uncharted that had fantastic stories, but were mostly great gameplay.
I agree to an extent. The thing is I really would love an interactive movie type of adventure if it was done different to this. I thought heavy rain was a mess and there is no way I'm going near this one based on what I've read already , it is at least as bad as heavy rain.
Medicore game at best. 6/10 IGN more low reviews incoming. David Cage loves making Quick time event games. Rather then having actual gameplay. Story is at times good like in heavy rain but he tries to hard to shoe horn emotional sequences. Heavy rain and this game can be played on youtube as majority of game you watch anyways.
It's a shame that last bubble can't be popped.
"Heavy rain and this game can be played on youtube as majority of game you watch anyways." Sure but you aren't as connected to a character as strongly compared to if you were 'playing' The Walking Dead is the best example. What makes you feel such a strong emotional connection to the main character and Clementine is because you control them, making you feel like you are part of the world. You don't as a strong connection by simply watching it on youtube.
I just realized that I spelled whether wrong in that tweet...XD
"Shuhei just reassured David Cage" On Twitter. As a PR stunt. He wasn't publicly going to say that he was disappointed with the amount of mediocre scores the game's gotten for God's sake (if he cares about that sort of thing). What were you expecting?
A game with a metacritic of 74 is not "mediocre".
And I never said it was. I said it's gotten some "mediocre scores" and that a higher up company figure wouldn't admit that he cares about them (if he does) publicly. Try to restrain that "wounded fanboy" attitude for once before commenting.
Yea, IGN gave this game a 6/10. It seems that the reviewer wasn't a fan of this style of game. If that's the case, get someone that will give the game a fair shake. IGN is always pretty strict though.
First off, I wanna say that I absolutely loved Indigo Prophecy and I also loved Heavy Rain as well. I just finished the Beyond Two Souls demo and I really enjoyed it. I can't wait to pick up the retail version and play through the whole story. There's more to life people than playing shooters!
Good for him, i wouldn't be put off from mixed reviews either if i was him. Stick to your vision and stay true to yourself.
Exactly some things work and something things don't. That's why it's important to take risks. You learn from the things that don't work and fix them on the next project. Now let's see the ps4 title! (please me Kara). What I question though is how can people knock off the gameplay style when games back then played the same way. It's like people tend to forget how gaming started. Many ways to play games the form of interactivity is what makes each different from one another.
HE should ignore thsoe feedbacks , ultimately its the publci's that matter . Soon enough the same clown judging it harshly will praise another "Qte fest" , with the probable same flaws , might be ryse , might be another exclusive , or even a multiplatform , but it will happens . They are utterly inconsistant , even when you stick with one particular author
Exactly.not everyone is gonna like this game because it's different and not comparable to other games. I applaud Sony for the variety and I will with hold my judgement till I play it. I loved heavy rain and I'm confident that I will at least enjoy this
Funny thing is these type of games is best suited for let's players.
The only thing that really matters is if it sells well. If the game doesn't perform well commercially he may lose funding for his next game.
Im giving you a bubble purely because I've had a shit day at work but your avatar made me laugh..... although I do agree with your comment as well.
No, not really. Sony take risks in the software department. Cage needs other people to critique his vision. Its for the best, just ask Neil Druckmann
You obviously dont understand Sony regarding these sort of games.
So if a game is underrecievd, Sony will just try again? That doesn't make a ton of sense from a buisness standpoint.
Ico, Shadow of the Collossus, and The Last Guardian beg to differ.
Huf. Its about trying something different and pushing gaming forward instead of staying still forever. We have seen sony do this since the PS1.
yeah, keep paying for shit like halo which keep repeating, you will keep getting shit Since quality doesn't matter but sales...
uh-oh, the dreaded vote of confidence.
David Cage is surrounded by people that know about making good games (like Yoshida that overseas all of Playstation). He'll be fine.
Thankfully, we are not talking about a sports team coach.
I knew things looked bad with the embargo.
I've seen a few, Kotaku posted one earlier.
http://www.metacritic.com/g... still getn the game regardless
I got the game but i got to wait until Thursday to play it
GTA5 also had an embargo like other games. Particularly story driven games get heavy embargos to not get spoiler reviews out too early.
I don't care what anyone says. David Cage is my favorite person in the industry.
I'm glad to hear that, I'm not a huge fan of the guy but I respect him and QD for trying something different.
I'm really enjoying Beyond Two Souls :)

They need to make a normal game. They make great stories, but as a gamer you want to play the game. When I was playing Heavy Rain, it reminded me of those CDi interactive movies. Naughty Dog has proved that you can have a great story AND a great game.
Why? Why does QD 'have' to make a normal game. So he can they can be like everyone else. I'll dread the day these guys just end up being like other developers, let them do their thing. Some fine-tuning here and there, and they can make it. I do 'slightly' agree on the playability of these games though. I don't want them to follow everyone else, but to actually have some form of conventional game mechanics would work in their favour.
Naw I rather do it the way he's been doing it. I get more engaged to the story that way. This was going to be a complicated story to nail but hey it was a risk worth taking. Though the game has choices it doesn't offer the variety of difference the whole plot takes when choosing different ones like Heavy Rain.
We already have 99% of devs doing normal games.
No they dont , all you have around are "normal games" . We need a few of those adventure interactive games . They'll just die out anyway , if no one wants them .. and so far some people do want them
Normal games? like the 90% of those normal games? I like David Cage's work. He inst afraid to step out outside the so called normal game. Also this is what makes Sony unique with the variety of games and not the same type of game over again.
Couldn't agree more.bubbles for the truth
Thats the thinking that almost killed point and click adventures that developers "need" to make normal games.
Whats a normal game?
I'd rather him do a game that actually relies on imagination than the same dull crap you see on a daily basis. I'm getting the game, don't care about reviews.
Heavy Rain received mixed reviews, and it's one of the best games ever made.
No it didn't 87 meta critic is not mixed. The fan reviews can never be trusted either/ http://www.metacritic.com/g...
I still don't get how a 74 can be seen as mixed. Only with video games is anything less than an 80 a disappointment.
People tired of gaming initially because it was all shooters. Then we had LBP, Infamous, Journery, etc., etc. New games and new ideas add for new experiences. If someone wants to play just shooters all the time then that's fine. I prefer a bit of variety. Just look at TLOU. Let's dare to be different!
a lot of these reviewers have been making fun of the game way before the embargo. all from "we need emotions" to "feelings", very evident yet silent jabs even from that joystiq guy - “We’ve hired real Hollywood composers to ensure that there is a piano playing during the sad goodbye scenes.” their agenda seems to be that they just hate cage and his statements, and have judged the game on that basis. they played the game not to experience it, but to find every flaw they can find to solidify and justify their perception of him. these reviewers give a lot of negative reviews, but they don't make fun of the games before embargo lifts with such specificity and worse, they are making fun of the game by straight-out inferring to cage's statements. that's how anyone can tell that these reviewers had an agenda going into this game. and the amount of hypocrisy is just astounding.
