Hands on with Ryse: Son of Rome - Digitally Downloaded

Owen S: One game that really stood out for me at the EB Expo 2013 was a launch title for the Xbox One; Ryse: Son of Rome

A cinematic action adventure title that Microsoft seems to be heavily relying on to sell consoles, the expectations of this remarkable tale surrounding an unwitting centurion from Ancient Rome is high. Whilst the many specifics of the story are still, understandably, being held close to the chest what I did see promises to offer juicy plotlines of revenge and patriotism.

Dropping into the stunning visuals of an extensively and impressively detailed rendered Roman world that can only be described as something a step above current console experiences, this is a game that does feel authentic to the kinds of fantasy historical action films that we've seen over the years, such as Gladiator. (Ryse: Son of Rome, Xbox One)

I know it's off screen video, but it is looking really impressive. Smooth frame rate, high fidelity graphics, and gameplay looks great. I'm excited and it's definitely a DAY ONE Digital Download for me! November 22nd can't come soon enough

It's crazy how good this game looks offscreen. This is my most anticipated launch title with Dead Rising 3 a close 2nd

Yeah if the story impresses like the visuals its definitely going to helluva game.

Just ignore the haters. Just wait for them to finish the game and put it on XBL for download.

I agree, after all this time, all the cursing, all the downplaying, it seems Ryse could be a sleeper hit launch title.

I guess the low expectations the game achieved after all those previews bashing it for all the QTE might help it when it finally ships and (maybe) reviews start praising it for the visuals and the simple fun.

I'll add it to my launch list.

Graphics isn`t everything. It looks very good graphically, but the gameplay doesn`t look very fun as it is grounded in reality and won`t over any crazy things to mix things up unless Crytek is hiding something.

People love to hate on this one (being an Xbox One exclusive) but the game definitely shows promise.
That said, since the original Crysis and Farcry . . . has Crytek really made a truly fun experience?
I honestly don't feel so.
That said, I truly have high hopes for this one.

Have you played FarCry 3? I've been told that's probably their best game yet.

900p jokes aside, this game is looking quite nice. Great fidelity and a believable world due to the quality foliage and water effects. I am not too worried about the story considering what has inspired the game (ancient Roman warfare), so if the combat system proves to be deeper than people are giving it credit for, it will do quite well for itself.

Unless I am wrong, it was actually an internal Ubisoft team - not affiliated with Crytek in any real way - that worked on the following releases of the series.
I may actually be wrong on that one.
Either way, not going to lie, I am not the biggest fan of 3. The game quickly went from "this is great" to "this is tedious" for me.

Far Cry 3 is from UbiSoft. Crytek only made the first FarCry and after that UbiSoft had the license and made the games on their own while Crytek moved on to do Crysis with EA.

That scene with the decapitated Roman soldiers has a cinematic feel to it. It's going to be nice to dive into the story along with those beautiful visuals

even with all the fanboy hate and all..this game will sell well enough to get a sequel..as crytek has already even stated that they have started ground work on a sequel with dragons and all.more fantasy...and im looking forward to it.

Yep same here.

Roman soldiers...ninjas they are not.

So freakin' loud when they move. lol

I know, right? I hope they don't try to implement a stealth mechanic especially if your wearing this kind of armor. Maybe the sfx settings need to be turned down a little.

I see next gen still has clipping issues. Guy inside a rock eh? Lighting looks nice. Characters are gorgeous. Foliage is still using lastgen tricks though.
