Opinion: Xbox One & PS4: Let’s Change The Guard

Franchises like Assassin’s Creed and Call of Duty led the charge during this generation – but their yearly commercial domination must come to an end for consoles to remain creatively healthy. (Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, Battlefield 4, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Culture, PS4, Xbox One)

This will happen when the audience decides it will happen.

I have no problem with sequels as long as the quality is given.

Actually I would be pretty pissed if MS decides to cancel all work on the Halo-franchise, because I really love Halo.

And I guess a lot of people would welcome a new Uncharted, Gears of War or the next GTA as well.

So sequels are not a bad thing by default.

"So sequels are not a bad thing by default."

That isn't really the point being made. Games that play it safe and are marketed to the lowest common denominator in the interest of maximized profits (like CoD and Assassins Creed) need to be put to bed.

I doubt Microsoft would end the series that is usually a huge determining factor for people buying their system. I think Halo might take a huge turn after Halo 6, but I don't think Microsoft would consider ending halo until they end xbox

I hope they don't make another gears of war...but I know its coming hopefully just maybe one more to see what it would look like but other than that just let the story end Im sick of companys milking games
Uncharted Im pretty much in the same thought process just one to see what they could do with it but after that maybe wait til the end of the generation to release another one.

Games what should rule this generation, a sequel to the new Tomb Raider, that game was dope, and a new legacy of kain game, new powerstones, and Monster hunter

couldn't agree more with a new Powerstone. But Capcom made it and they're stupid now so it will probably never come out.

I agree, games like Assassin's Creed and COD (especially COD) NEED a break.

The author has a point, but this whole analogy reminds me of the music industry. There will always be Pop music and commercial radio to shove it down peoples throats. And tons of ordinary people will love all of that radio friendly Pop music no matter how much it all sounds the same. But then, there are the real music lovers, who are paying attention to the underground scene and getting into all these bands and artists most people havent heard about, but are doing something fun, different, and unique. Sure everyone loves the Pop music because it's got catchy melodies and hooks, but that indie music has more going on, more complex songwriting, more texures and tones to hear in the instruments...stuff that's lost on those Rhianna fans

Games have taken the same direction, starting with this past generation of consoles and yearly releases from big studios. You've got your Call of Duty and Assassins Creed and those games that are so popular becuase they are simple and accessible... everyone and their mother plays CoD now. But as long as Console makers and publishers recognize the "core" gamer audience, and don't keep trying to make every game a CoD or GTA clone, we will always have studios pushing out new and innovative games and IP's.. Just look at this gen and the way that Naughty Dog and Rockstar have pushed the boundaries in storytelling in games... I mean, a good portion of TLoU was just navigating through the desolate environment as Joel and Ellie talked and presented real characters that we all got attatched to. A lot of casual CoD style gamers would get bored of gameplay like that, and would just be ancy to jump into action all the time. But good developers and publishers recognize that there is still a hardcore crowd out there on the consoles that still wants to see the boundaries of gaming nudged forward occassionally.

Assassins creed is my favriorite franchise and no other video game franchise has become as big as assassins in such short time but after 6 strong years a year break would be refreshing to them and the fans.I belive ubisoft has already decided to alternate releases yearly with watch dogs but only depending on how successful watch dogs is (which it will) assassins creed & watch dogs are a great one/two punch ! =}
