Microsoft’s Albert Penello Clarifies Use of Kinect for Advertising, How Biometric Data is Collected

A few months ago an interview about the possible use of Kinect for advertising caused concern between gamers that saw it as some sort of Trojan Horse to boost Microsoft's advertising revenue at their expense. Today Microsoft’s Director of Product Planning Albert Penello explained what's up with that and with the collection of biometric data.

I love Evil Dead...

...but I don't like Kinect.

Screw it. Here's an "agree".

malokevi1508d ago

lol, why thank you! You are the exception. That agree is extremely helpful in diminishing the staggering agree/disagree ratio that I have goin on.

Apparently not groovy.

*runs away crying and waving hands in the air*

WeAreLegion1507d ago

Wow. A lot of people disagreed with that decision. Lol.

UltimateMaster1507d ago

Simple.
People see a kinect article, they click disagree.

cyguration1508d ago

Even Bruce Campbell can't save them...

"Second – if something like that ever happened, you can be sure it wouldn’t happen without the user having control over it. Period."

I bloody well hope not. I think what needs to be said is everyone will need to thoroughly read the terms of conditions just be sure. I am only starting to realise I could be signing my life away on those things without noticing. I remember play.com managed to get people to sign over their souls on Halloween (or April fools. Wasn't reported on the day) one year because people did not read the terms and conditions.

FlameHawk1508d ago

Why does it matter to you? You aren't even going to get a Xbox One because you are a PS fanboy, stop acting like you are going to get it and then complain about it.

Abriael1508d ago

he's afraid of his neighbor's kinect jumping in from the window at night while he sleeps and doing dirty things to him.

iamnsuperman1508d ago

@Abriael

Thanks, I am now.

SilentGuard1508d ago

Terms and conditions don't mean squat when MS reserves the right to change the terms and conditions when and how it sees fit.

jmc88881508d ago (Edited 1508d ago )

Again as said below but maybe lost.....

Where in ANY of the EULA's ANYWHERE for ANYTHING is there mention of even one NSA policy?

Do people really think that they'll find what the NSA is doing in the EULA? (terms and conditions)

rainslacker1508d ago (Edited 1508d ago )

Having control over such things, and understanding what such things mean are two entirely different things. How many people already don't read the stuff they agree to?

I'm pretty sure MS isn't going to spend a lot of time dwelling on the possible downsides of such policies if they implement them. They will put positive spins on it to show the benefits, much like they tried to do with DRM. The fact that many people seem to be able to think of ways this could be profitable means that any corporation out there has thought the same thing, and in the world of advertising and data mining, the players are ruthless for every drop of blood they can get.

It's not the intelligent people that care about their privacy that anyone who does this stuff makes money off of. It's the dumb people who let anything and everything into their lives without question because they believe large corporations are not out to milk every last cent out of them they can.

@Flame
I care, because it sets a bad precedent. Those same stupid people mean I have to not just have fun, but think about what it means in the future, when enough stupid people show that it is profitable and other companies decide to follow suit.

redwin1508d ago

this is recycled new. MS went through this already. sony is really worry about the xbox if they have to resolve to this. I really don't see MS trolling sony buti do see sony trolling MS all the time. its alright sony, I will buy your system too.

"Basically, we don’t want a situation where a user could think they are launching something else, but didn’t end the Skype call and video is still getting transmitted."

Whew, there goes my worries. Now I can switch from Skype to porn without problems.

Transporter471508d ago

I hope you wash your keyboard and mouse often....

KonsoruMasuta1508d ago

Oh, I do. I don't want to ruin my keyboard and mouse so I keep them in top shape. I need them to play eroge.

cyguration1508d ago

While your friends on Skype won't watch you watch porn... Kinect will.

Always watching... always listening... even to fapping.

mydyingparadiselost1508d ago

Kinect has detected motion lotion audio. Would you like to buy a mood candle screensaver for $4.99?

jackanderson19851508d ago

didn't apple have to introduce a switch to turn off the user information being used in ads cuz of some EU law? if not i'm sure there is numerous data protection acts that prevent MS from using your data with express permission to do so
