EuroGamer Expo proves that Next-Gen starts next year

The EuroGamer Expo is now a permanent fixture in the UK games calendar. This year’s event was anticipated a little more than usual as it was the first opportunity for a wider gaming audience to get hands on with the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

But did the new consoles have a strong showing? Thumbsticks looks at the whether a day one purchase is essential. (Eurogamer Expo 2013, PS3, PS4, Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One)

I totally disagree with the article. He failed to recognize that quite a few of the crossgenerational games he complains about were developed from the PC down, ensuring the best gameplay for each of the systems involved. The next-generation experience will be intact for the games that he complained about because they are taking the lead from the most powerful hardware.

Remember that most game engines for the next generation are designed to scale down. Meaning, they will take advantage of the highest spec hardware down to the lowest, taking into account their features down the line. Unlike generations before, the next generation of hardware are basically souped up PCs, which allowed developers, years ago, to guesstimate what they would expect out of them and design their game engines around them.

Just check out the videos for the launch games and you can see how big of a difference there is between them and the best of the triple a titles on current GEN systems. Yes, in some cases the gameplay matches that of current GEN systems, but there are other games that are taking full advantage of the newer hardware and providing features that can't be done with our current machines.

Overall, I would say this is probably the best console launch ever. Games from the start are taking full advantage of the machines, yet down the line when developers learn to code to the metal, we will have something even more spectacular. We will have more launch games than ever, and they will look like nothing we've ever seen before.

I, for one, cannot wait.

I am excited by the possibilities too. But apart from a visual point of view I can't see the difference in cross-gen titles.

Fundamental gameplay mechanics have to scale up., not down. Whatever the wallpaper the likes of AC4 and WatchDogs will play the same on every system.

That said, the possibilities are mouthwatering, I just don't think this year will be the year we see the difference.

thanks for the comment! Nice to get a well argued response :)
