It seems to me, that a big reason that Japan is so mobile centric, is that companies are too scared of the budgets on consoles to release their games for them. Instead, they release their games for handhelds, and because all of the good games are on handhelds, that's what the people buy.

Mobile is absolutely huge in Japan, more so than here. Their mobile tech is far ahead of anything in the west. Not to mention low development costs.

@kalk.... because all the good games are on handhelds you say?! Hahaha! That's almost like saying all the best games are on the wii....

Btw, I've never seen a cat that shoots freakin' lazer beams out of its mouth before?? And i watch shitloads of japanese movies and anime....

Or because it's a very social way to game. Mosnter Hunter Tri G has no online. But in Japan you don't need it. You can join up with a guy on a subway as everyone and their mother plays Monster Hunter.

I'm not sure if people will agree or not but it feels to me that Japan is a tad behind when it comes to moving towards HD gaming & beyond. They seem to have grasp that concept of game development at a much later time or took a longer time to adjust to changing formats.

Some companies have adjusted to the changes of the industry much better than others, while others (which i will not name but some may know already) are severely lagging behind.

Once/If Japan has caught up to the ever changing landscape of the game industry & its development than we will see a much more equal playing field in general. Japan has its style which is why a lot of us love what they do but if they can develop games faster & more consistently the better.

Judging by how the PS3 to date has sold about a third of what the PS2 sold lifetime over there, I can say I agree.
