Beyond: Two Souls is censored in Europe (violence) and probably also in US (nudity)

A blog post from Beyond’s European Product Manager at SCEE, Ross Alexander says:

“I can fill you in with more detail on this.

There are only two amends between the EU and US versions of the game, amounting to about 5-10 seconds of gameplay that’s not been removed, just edited slightly to be in line with a PEGI 16 rating. (Beyond: Two Souls, PS3, PS4)

well i didn't see anything he said that indicated the us version would be edited. He wants the game to be pegi 16 instead of 18 and the us uses esrb which would have had this game at M for the violence most likely anyways. The US rating will be M for the vast majority of games but its not going to go up from M because of 5 seconds of nudity which has been in plenty of games, unless of coarse the game is going for a T rating but id be very surprised to see that.

Well, American society is extremely prudish when it comes to nudity. The word 'Tidbits' for example was altered from the English word 'Titbits' because it was considered too rude (despite being derived from the small birds rather than female breasts).

Try finding a nudist beach in the US, or advertising using a naked body (however necessary or tastefully done).

lol I am American so I know what its like in America. Laws are against nudity for children to see because that would be so awful/s. I dont see how that has any thing to do with the rating system or censorship in America. Nudity is not censored in america it just gets a rating of M like I said so kids cant buy it. The fact is the game is rated M for violence already so it will be in no way "censored" in America. They want it to be pegi 16 in Europe which doesn't exist in America. You cant just make assumptions based off an opinion of American culture with no previous examples of games getting censored to back it up. Games dont usually get censored in europe either they just get changed like Beyond to meet their desired rating.

So we're okay with movies having adult content, but heaven forbid we EVER let a game have that. That's just crazy talk.
ginsunuva  +   641d ago
That's because all games are for kids, remember? Duh!
MasterCornholio  +   641d ago
I think its valuable that our children learn what to do with prostitutes after having sexual intercourse with them and GTA V is the perfect game to teach that.

Lol

The movie industry is in no way safe from censorship either. Watch the documentary "This Film is Not Yet Rated" to see how corrupt the MPAA is when giving ratings for artistic vision and sexuality.

this isn't a movie? lol chill joking.
Bathyj  +   641d ago
Why dont they have a censored and an unconcerned version and have them rated accordingly? Let people choose which version they want and youre not excluding anyone from getting the game.

Seems weird, considering kids will probably not get this game anyway.

PS
Europe is ok with nudity but does not like violence while the US is ok with violence but does not like nudity. That says alot.

I recall quite vividly that Madison was naked in Heavy Rain. You could even control how naked she was, how long she was naked, and what she did while naked.

Not sure why it would be an issue now.

In response to you though...we all know the naked female form is an abomination on society, and the only way to counteract such a thing and keep our women clothed is with a violent culture. As an American I know this. I will dismiss the fact that there are other cultures that have the same attitudes towards women sexuality and violence, which we American's hate. Go figure. And I hope that my sarcasm is obvious.

''and the only way to counteract such a thing and keep our women clothed is with a violent culture''
Not true in my country . Womans wear good cloths by them selfs. They do it with their own will without hate or force. It's benefits are really great for them. Our government is the opposite.

Apparently it's about 5-10 seconds of gameplay that's been
--edited slightly to be in line with a PEGI 16 rating--.

So they haven't completely cut content, just changed the scenes slightly to get a lower age rating.

No need to panic.

Sounds like it's been cut.

Sounds more like camera angle changes & such.
The story wouldn't flow very well if they just outright cut scenes from the game.

I'm just repeating what they've said.

This pisses me off so much screw censorship
This just makes it easier to save money. No point in wasting money on censorship.
Bathyj  +   641d ago
Thats a shame. I can tell you were sooo gonna get this game too.

I'm so sick of my games being censored

That would be quantum Dreams and to my knowledge they are not owned by Sony. Santa Monica Studios on the other hand are and they are famous for putting incredible violence and sex minigames complete with nice juicy breasts into one of their franchises.

The same Sony that threatened to revoke Acclaim's license if they didn't censor BMX XXX back in the day.
tigertron  +   641d ago
Censorship is wrong - especially in video games.

Why as a fully grown man am I not able to see a bit of violence when I see it in other games and films all the time? why must the nanny state censor some violence from a video game? *sigh*
Activemessiah  +   641d ago
They're probably planning to use it as future DLC
