Blockbuster Titles Dominate Video Game Market More Than Ever

Rather than saturating the market with as many titles as possible, video game publisher giants are consolidating themselves; pumping more time, money, and manpower into creating a few major blockbuster hits.

That doesn't sound very promising for if you're on the lookout for an entirely new game formula from the big name publishers. It looks like creativity and new innovations may be resting more solidly on indie releases than we thought.

I think it's only going to become more and more an exact mirror of the film industry in that respect. There will be the odd gem (The Last of Us) but for the most part, much of what we'll see will be formulaic because it works (a la Fast and the Furious). There are always plenty of indie and independent films, but you're right, it's not like people line up out the doors to watch them.

Although Last of Us is an excellent game, it falls in line with AAA games. Huge production value and so on.

I think you are right though with indies and the film industry.

There are the occasional hits like MineCraft, which I don't play ironically.
