Will Shinji Mikami’s Evil Within rejuvenate the Survival Horror genre? | GearNuke

Survival Horror in current mainstream games is dead. It has been long dead now. Shinji Mikami, the creator of Resident Evil, is finally trying to bring it back through his latest game. He is finally trying to rejuvenate the long dead Survival Horror, which has now been replaced by more action-oriented titles with elements of so called “Horror” thrown in the mix, and the “Survival Horror” of these titles is long gone. (PC, PS3, PS4, Shinji Mikami, The Evil Within, Xbox 360, Xbox One)

"Will Shinji Mikami’s Evil Within rejuvenate the Survival Horror genre?"

If the hype is to be believed, yeah, probably.

The genre was never dead ... it was just Capcom making up excuses to call of dutify resident evil and naughty dog proved it with the Last of Us

Actually, The Last of Us falls under the category of action survival horror.
ZHZ90  +   199d ago
TLOU was still surrvival game and latest RE games lacked surrvival, and Clickers were horrific.
BABY-JEDI  +   199d ago
Seriously, TLOU wasn't horror. Gee, I guess it was an adventure in picnic land then with little dancing puppies? Reality is far more horrific than fantasy. Think about it?
_QQ_  +   199d ago
just because a game has infected and is classified as horror doesn't make it scary... i guess you guys are easily frightened because everyone i know agrees the game isn't scary. .@ jedi baby. reality? zombies are reality now? i'm not bashing the game, it was an amazing story, with amazing characters but it just wasn't scary.

Its looking pretty good and after the massive disappointment of RE6 (which followed the kind of disappointing RE5) Its something im personally looking forward to.
Nerdmaster  +   199d ago
For me RE5 was way more disappointing than 6. 5 was the sequel to one of the best games ever made, so I was expecting something in the same level or better. For 6 my expectations were way lower, so it disappointed me less.

The Last Of Us is one of my favorite games this gen, but it's not really a survival horror any more than a game like Bioshock 1, the elements are there, for example the part when you have to start up the generators in the dark abandoned factory was creepy as hell. But other than that I consider the game to be a survival action.

Survival Horror has seen a niche revival on the PC with games like Metro 2033, Amnesia, and more recently Outlast which is set to release on PS4 post launch,, especially Outlast it's arguably the most horrifying game ever made, seriously check that game out its unreal.

Just reading the word Outlast has now ensured a poor nights sleep, cheers

If what I've read and seen is true, this game might just revive the series. Haven't had a real survivor horror since Ps1 and early Ps2 days.TLOU was ok tho. Hope this game does it

Looks ok this game only gets attention because its made by Mikami pretty much.

The last of us is a survival horror. It brings in a reality horror, not a fantasy horror (eg RE). No hero's with steroids & a cast of characters that are totally believable with their own set of real survival agendas. The horror being human nature within extreme circumstances.
Juste_Belmont  +   199d ago
That's exactly what Resident Evil used to be about. The plot may have become convoluted over the course of the series, but the original games tried to maintain at least some sense of plausibility.

I hope that Shinji Mikami can bring back the old style of survival horror that RE used to be known for. For me, it wasn't necessarily the creatures in the games that were scary but rather the limited resources, the set camera angles that limited your vision, and the feeling that you were all alone in your fight to stay alive.

The original RE 1, 2 & 3 were classic ( also RE0). Shinji has made some classic gaming moments & may this game bring more.

Evil Within looks very impressive, game is still a long way off but looking great so far.

On consoles I hope so. On PC the genre never died.
