Is occulus Rift really the future or just another gimmick ?

The Oculus Rift by Oculus VR has been causing a stir in the gaming world, and its appearance at Eurogamer Expo 2013 has been no different. So far, the Oculus Rift has been visiting the Cons and Expos with a variety of games; from EVE to Hawken, but at EGX they decided to show off their capabilities in the upcoming MMOFPS, War Thunder. Not a Gimmick, it is the future.

I will take this as the future of gaming over Kinect 2.0 or PlayStation Camera any day.

it just needs to be implemented on a system level so that it isnt any extra work for game developers.

The main reason i think the Oculus Rift will do much better than gimmicky motion controls is that this requires no extra effort from the player, but adds greatly to the immersion. It is the perfect way to advance gaming.

I used to talk about this with my bro years ago that one day you will be able to sit in a VR chair and control everything with your thoughts/movements and this is that step in that direction.

I hope so too then make a real sword art online game lol.

Very much want this to be the future. Full screen gaming with a headset? About 40 gamers could share an apartment, just line pillows around the walls to sit.

Joking aside, if this takes off you can see future iterations where you get full 360 surround sound built into the headset. Old genres born anew, horror games will be awesome again!

Its a lot less of a Gimmick than 3D is. At least with Occulus rift people like me can use it but I cant see 3d. I've tried shutter glasses 3D and that other 3D with polarised glasses and didn't see 3D at all. It looksed like normal TV to my eyes. I will buy the Rift headset for sure. I cant see it dying off as fast as 3D.

You being part of a small minority that can't see 3d isn't the same as 3d being a gimmick. It might be fair to call it a gimmick as the adoption rate is low and there is a general disinterest though.

I play almost all my games in 3D at the moment, I think it adds a lot to the visual appeal.

Its not just because I cant see in 3D that I say its a gimmick. Everybody I know says its a gimmick and a lot of people on the internet say so too. I see more of an uptake with Rift than I saw with 3D.

Depends. Oculus Rift should get some more support, if it isn't just a gimmick.

Tried out at Pax and I was conquered!

Funny. We all know its a gimmick. Why this thing is even getting any amount of coverage is beyond me. Same as that projector their selling with XBone.

Anyway...

With Oculus Rift, we're one step closer to Otherland. Look it up, if you don't know what that is. :)

Oculus Rift and Virtux Omni are the first steps towards a Star Trek Holodeck.

So yes, I believe it's the future. They'll both have my money as soon as they have a consumer product ready.

Actually the rift could be the holo deck now. Rope off a football field or a large field outside with sensors to mark off a area then the Oculus rift could make its own world in the known space. You could walk with it and as long as you stay in bounds of the marked off area which that info is sent to the occoulus rift you could have a Holo deck type experience right now.

Well having to rope of a physical area the size of a football field to play a VR game isn't much of a holodeck :P

That's why I suggested the Virtuix Omni as well since that would solve (most of) that issue. Both are already being sold in dev kits that the public can (and is) buying. Like I said above, I'm just waiting for the full customer release.

@0ut1awed

I think a deck of a ship would be very similar to a size of a football field.

VR head sets has been an idea thats been around and tried since the 80s.
It's only now that the tech is getting to a point where it is workable and affordable to the average joe.

If people have been trying to get this to work for 30 years, I don't think it's going to die out soon.

Ive been watching as many oculus rift videos on youtube as much as possible and continue to seek out the latest news on it. I'm absolutely convinced and look forward to its release. If this thing can scare the crap out of people with rough buggy low quality graphics demos of horror games, imagine full fledged games.

Can you suffer blindness and dizziness for a long period of time after using this device? consider that this require for the subject to wear it. I have to think of safety first before getting one. Best to wait it out and let the first wave of people who jump on new tech do the beta test, test it first.

You wont go blind from using Rift and some people do get dizziness at first. The developers of rift have worked with the rift in such a way that it doesnt cause as much eyestrain as looking at a TV screen or computer monitor for hours
HmongAmerican  +   445d ago
Thats a good sign, as long as it does not cause eyestrain.

Out of the the technologies meant to change the way we experience games (Kinect, Wiimotes, Wiipad, Move), Occulus Rift seems by far the only one with a real chance.
