BT writes: Recently, I sat down and watched Professor and Layton and the Eternal Diva with my family. The movie is set during the current trilogy of Professor Layton games (a little after The Last Specter, to be specific) and has Professor Layton receiving a request for help from a former student, Janice, who is staring in an opera about the mythical kingdom of Ambrosia, a kingdom whose residents found the secret of eternal life. Janice writes that there is a little girl claiming to be her old friend Melina, who passed away over a year ago, and that she has discovered the secret of eternal life. This leads to Layton and Luke having to unravel a mystery that may lead to the truth behind the Kingdom of Ambrosia.
Renowned for their terrible quality, video game film adaptations have disappointed gamers over and over again for the past two decades. Super Mario Bros., House of the Dead, Street Fighter... name a popular gaming franchise and chances are there's been a director that has completely destroyed the property when it hit the big screen.
This unfortunate trend, however, seems to be changing.
GameXplain: "When I first heard that there was going to be a Professor Layton movie, I was downright thrilled. Not once did it ever cross my mind that it would be bad. It couldn’t be a bad video game movie because, for one, it was going to be animated, and, two, the Layton games have already become so cinematic. Intriguing plots, great characters, an eye-catching style, and the simple charm of bringing it all together makes it a perfect candidate for a film. Now that Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva has finally arrived in America, is it something that fans will love or just leave them puzzled?"
