Polygon Live: Is Grand Theft Auto the most influential game franchise?

Polygon - "Welcome to our first episode of Polygon Live.

Each episode, I will be joined by a fellow member of Polygon's editorial staff to answer an important, unusual or agitating question related to video games. As the show moves forward I hope to hand off hosting duties, so that more Polygon team members across the globe have an opportunity to speak with you directly via video." (Culture, Grand Theft Auto)

I thought Call of duty holds the crown.

Call of Duty Who?

Modern Warfare was very influential, but the innovations seen in the multi-player had previously been done on Battlefield 2. Both are incredible games, but COD4:MW gets credit for it, sadly. Lol.

It isn't because no one tries to be it. At the moment COD is up there as it created such an influx in FPS shooters which based themselves around the idea of an arcade/twitchy shooter

GTA is its own thing

It is certainly one of them.

Also influential:
Half-Life 2
Uncharted 2
Gears of War
Burnout 3: Takedown
Super Mario 64
Halo: Combat Evolved

You're missing Warcraft 3.

Oh! Good pick. Both Warcraft 3 and World of Warcraft have been massively influential. Diablo I/II, as well.

Uncharted and Gears influential? Need to replace those with TR and Winback/killswitch and add MGS and Donkey Kong to that list.

Killswitch may have been the first third person game with a cover system but it really didn't influence any developers like Gears and Uncharted did
Imalwaysright  +   801d ago
Really? And wich games influenced those games? Winback was the beggining, killswitch/MGS2 were the evolution and Gears and Uncharted are the followers. Give credit where its due.
