Sony's Bid for Greatness

The [a]list daily: "PS Vita TV is a key part of Sony's battle to dominate game hardware." (PS Vita, Sony)

It's the one device to draw everything together in the sony/playstation ecosystem, to create a really low entry point and open further markets for Sony. You've seen the pressers and heard the speeches - Sony is being run as a whole these days - their hardware is going to exploit everything good about Sony and bring it all under one roof (pictures/tv/music/gaming/etc) .

It's easy to dismiss VitaTV in a fanboy knee-jerk way "it's dead already", but according to Sony it's only just beginning its life. Check the info in my blog post: http://n4g.com/user/blogpos... - Sony didn't just throw this thing together as a way to sash in on waht some people see as "failing tech" - their plan has included Vita TV for quite some time, clearly well before the ps4 announce in February.

Sony is preparing for a paid tv content service. The VitaTv is the entry level device to get this going. I'm not sure how excited I am by the announcement. As a Vita owner I would really like Sony to focus on creating games exclusive to that platform that showcase it's capabilities. I would hope that would stimulate sales since software drives hardware. VitaTv is the opposite of that. It's a low cost hardware piece that may attract developers if it sells well. The issue I have is the VitaTv capabilities are not the same as the Vita's. Sony would be better off selling a Bravia with the capabilites built in instead of clouding an already murky market.

Of course, that's implied in my comment - bringing all of Sony together through their devices - they're not planning to do that for free. But that's only a part of it.

"Sony would be better off selling a Bravia with the capabilites built in instead of clouding an already murky market."

I have no doubt they will also be looking at doing just that, potentially (although less likely) with lower sale price + subscription contract.

I dunno, I couldn't care less about the paid TV content service, unless it rivals cable, which I don't really care for anyways. I like the fact that it brings the VIta to the TV, because there are some games for it I would like to play on the TV. It's cheap enough to bolster the install base, which can only bring more games to the system as install base drives development.

Otherwise, I do agree, I would like to see games that take advantage of the regular Vita hardware, but there's nothing to say that content in those same games can't be oriented around the standard controller...particularly the DS4. I wouldn't be surprised at all if this was one of the biggest factors in having the touchpad on the DS4 itself.

How Sony was able to keep this thing under wraps for so long is beyond me.

I'll be buying 2 myself. One for the bedroom to stream my PS4 games, and one for the living room to play Vita games at home.:)

You keep playing those milked IP's and non-HD games again where Sony try to create more new Experiences with HD graphics and story orientated for Gamers with great Value through the services PS+ and Cross/busy/plsy/save along with Gaikai support of PS3 and PS4 games on the go and in TV with $100 device. Sony games are about experiencing new things and relaxing and having fun with those in different gameplay mechanics and input for controlling games.
