The Obscure Cult Game That’s Secretly Inspiring Everything

Wired: Two youths on an adventure together, having just come through dangerous territory, spy a nearby bench and sit on it to rest, taking a quiet, serene moment before their next trial.

If you saw that scene in a recent videogame, would it make you think of an old game called Ico? If so, we’re on the same wavelength. (Culture, ICO, PS2, PS3)

Ico is a masterpiece.

Lets not forget the fact that it was also a epilogue to Shadow of the Colossus. Not a bad 1-2 punch. Not bad at all :)

Essentially in Ico, you have long walks, lots of ingame cutscenes and simple but, smart puzzles.

There is not a lot of gameplay variation, other than swinging your sword or catching the chick. Its not Prince of Persia where every 5 feet you are junping or fighting. Like I said, thats sort of the charm of the game.

Some of the memorable stuff in Limbo was just a pacing moment when you would just walk through surreal forests after completing a tough challenge, which gave you time to breathe and immerse with the environment.

You said in your 1st post that Ico "had no gameplay". And now you said Ico "doesn't have a lot of gameplay variation". Dude, i think you should honest with yourself and say "I NEVER play ICO", instead of spouting bullshit to us ^^

ICO is 100% gameplay and 100% percent story telling

A very great game. It is one of those games where you can see where future games got inspiration. It wasn't the first game to try and evoke emotion from the player but this game inspired 2 console generations of game creators. Name another game that was able to do that. I give this title "your favorite developer's favorite game."

played it, never finished it . FPS, shooting waves of enemies, meleeing enemies, "immersion" into the game... feels like a lot of known FPS; both good and bad.

I literally just ended ICO yesterday finally. 11 big guys down in Shadow coinsidently playing right now at time of finding this article. Both Amazing games and always recognized the inspiration factors in other title. Def influenced me since the early 2000's. BTW ICO has a book (for those who still do that) It goes into an amazing back story and emotional detail through key parts of the game. Play first, read later though I stopped reading until I finished the game.
