Chris Hecker Sounds Off on Microsoft’s New Indie Program | OnlySP

OnlySP: Support for independent game development has been a substantial theme throughout this year’s console war. Sony has been trying their best to hammer home the fact that their PlayStation 4 supports indie development since the beginning of their console campaign. Even as far back as their original announcement in February when they announced that Jonathan Blow’s The Witness would be coming to PS4, Sony has made indie support a top bullet point in their marketing strategy since day one. (Microsoft, Xbox One)

One thing I'm noticing so far from a developer perspective is a problem with communication. When jumping through the hoops necessary to get on as a developer with Sony, Sony was engaged and communicative throughout the process. I was contacted by one of their reps within a day of filling out our forms and we'd been in contact regularly after that even to let me know that they were still working through our application and had nothing to report.

With MS, we've so far received one automated email indicating that they received our forms. That's it. It's been 4 weeks now with no followup communication of any kind. A bit disheartening considering how Sony was with us every step of the way throughout the application process and beyond.

MS may be up front saying they`re supporting indies, but down here in the trenches, I ain`t seeing it yet.

That's interesting because with the company I'm at we get nothing but calls from MS reps and we get call backs either same day or next depending on time from Seattle.

So far MS has been way more than friendly with the people I work for in making sure we get what we're working on running on their system (and windows).

We haven't worked with Sony so I'm sure what you're saying about them is true too.

Maybe MS knows about all the hundred of articles you kept submitting to N4G about their demise?

LOL, just kidding...I couldn't resist.

That's good to hear. Maybe it's just that we're not a US dev, and they're just taking care of local developers first. Is your company just starting off with MS as indie developers or did they have an established relationship with Microsoft prior to MS's new indie initiatives? Are you US based? I wonder if that makes a difference?

We are as fresh as a start up as start ups can be.

From as far as I know we have had no prior relationship with MS. But I'm not as high up to actually know full on details so who really knows.

Do you fanboys ever STFU seriously this isn't a Sony related article

You just felt it was your duty to come and troll the article with your BS GeeZ

Microsoft's actions have all been the polar opposite of their words. I'd like to see them walk the talk before they hail themselves to be the king of the indies.

They have never claimed that..

Its just sad that all of a sudden, people forget it was Microsoft that brought indie gaming to consoles.. And acting like they dont care about them when all evidence points to the contrary.
