Gamesot writes: "The NPD Group today released United States sales data for August 2013, revealing Nintendo's 3DS was the top-selling platform during the month, outpacing the PlayStation Vita, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3."
Microsoft continues to spin the NPD understanding that NPD reports hardware as "video game system" and software is combined across all available platforms in which the game released. MS has lost 4 months straight to Nintendo for #1 hardware.
Makes you wonder what other console makers did like the PS3 and Wii U? I shudder to even think about the PS Vita being dead in the water with no help at all.
@eagle...uhh...the 360 is the best selling home console in the US for the month and the 3ds is the best selling portable console in the US for the month. Is that better?
@eagle21 No spinning... both Microsoft and Sony lost to Nintendo.
But Sony didn't spin. Microsoft released a statement that was delusional. They claim to still be the number one selling hardware for how many months they claimed. If Microsoft actually had a handheld that outsold PS4 month after month, you think they would pretend it didn't happen? LOL
I dont really think the 3ds deserves the sales myself, i prefer the ds lite and the dsi, well done to nintendo tho hopefully they can get these kinda sales with the wii u as well.
I disagree. The 3DS is much better than the DS. Fire Emblem Awakening, Luigi Mansion, Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, Kingdom Hearts DDD, Shin Megami Tensei 4 and so many other good games on the 3DS. It deserves all the sales its getting.
Well on the original DS, you could argue it had the original Fire Emblem, and it also had Phoenix Wright and so on and so forth.I'm not saying one or the other is right of course, I think they're both great systems that offered me games that I still have yet time to play.
Guys. You can play both on the 3DS. It's a win/win!
3DS keeps my kids quiet, which is great and it's a fun little system. But a more accurate title would have been: 'As Xbox 360 and PS3 sales fall, 3DS tops August charts'. Sales of PS3 and 360 are slowing quickly now and this is the driving factor of this result, not a sudden and massive influx of 3DS selling. Not that Nintendo are desperate for sales anyway, it's flown off the shelf for ages now! :)
What? Noone has made a ds game for like a year now. Also, 3ds does ds AND 3ds AND everything dsi does. It seems like logic justifies acknowledging 3ds deserves it if you like your dsi
September is going to tough but I think the 3DS is still going to hang on & come out on top with MH IV help. The 3DS has October locked for sure however.
also... one word... Pokemon.
It may be an achievement that it has beaten the home consoles, but i bet most people who would have purchased a PS3 / 360 are holding out for the PS4 and X1, so expect the same sales figures for the next couple of months
The hardcore gamers are holding out. It's the casual gamers that are buying the PS3 / 360. That's why I SMH when I see hardcore gamers fighting over the sale number of those systems. The battle for the next better online system hasn't begun yet, but then again must of them aren't true hardcore gamer, due to the fact they don't have a 3DS or Wii U. What is a harder gamer? The systems I own are the XBOX, 360, PS, PS2, PS3, NES, SNES,GC, N64, Wii, Wii U, 3DS, DS lite, & DS SP. Can I call myself a hardcore gamer without any sega systems?
Waht!?!? No dreamcast!?!??!
Are people still buying ps3's and 360's with the new machines so close to release now? I know if one of mine fails now i wont be replacing it.
The PS3 has a better library than the PS4. The PS3 can play PS1 and PS2 games, the PS4 cannot. No matter how you look at it, PS3 is superior. It really isn't that hard to wrap your mind around. Unless you're a casual gamer who only ever cares about the latest titles, of course. So are you, son? A C-c-c-c-casual.
PS3 can't play ps2 games... why do you think Sony made sooo many collections.
@Lopez: the PS3 can play PS2 games, just not very many of them. Digital PS2 classics are a thing that exist on the Playstation 3; they are also a thing that will NOT exist on the Playstation 4.
Apparently you never heard of GTA V.
I would have been surprised if it didn't.
I know 3DS has been doing well but right now many are just holding on for next gen instead of buying ps3 or xbox360 I think both ms and Sony need to drop the price
I can't wait to pick up an ps3 for 99 bucks. This is why I love the end of console cycles. Cheap systems and cheap games.
Whats clear now i think is both the PS3 and 360 need a big cut to tap into the lesser well of families of the US. Clearly if both could be cut they would of been by now....maybe a $50 might happen in a few months...Actually same goes for the rest of the world also.
A lot of these systems are being bought by there parents for their kids. So the new systems may not affect the older system sales to much. Case in point the Wii still outsells the Wii U.
Only expect this to increase for the 3DS since pokemon X and Y are easily the most anticipated since Silver/Gold. Seriously it is crazy how many people I grew up with playing pokemon who haven't played in years are wanting to pick up a 3ds to play it.
Man and it has Pokemon, Monster Hunter, Smash Bros, Zelda link between worlds, layton, yoshis new island all coming in the next few months. I really do feel sorry for the Vita, its a great little system but it doesnt really stand much of a chance in my opinion. Every good game on the Vita has a superior big brother on a home console, but I cant play a decent pokemon game on my WiiU...
Can't wait to see the sales numbers after Pokemon X and Y release ;) can't wait
Guess the 3DS will be the best selling console this gen (PS4/X1/Wii U/VITA) by miles. Was funny when most people implied it's gonna bomb into oblivion (I'm not saying they were baseless on that thought at the time). MH4, Pokemon then SSB? Damn. Anyone seen the people already lining up for MH4? http://matome.naver.jp/odai... It's only gonna get better from then on.
