The 3DS remained behind the DS for the first nine months when you align the launches for the two handhelds. However, with the price cut along with several key titles the 3DS took a huge lead topping out at 6,428,655 units. Other than in one month the 3DS remained ahead of the DS from month nine to month 25. It was at this time that DS started flying off shelves.
An important note is that the two handhelds launched at different times of the year. The DS first launched in November 2004, while the 3DS launched in February. That would mean the DS has had one more holiday on the market and once the current holiday’s roll around the 3DS should make up a lot of the ground it has currently lost.
