The Co-op Podcast 58: Can a Female lead in GTA work?

Gary Swaby at The Koalition writes: Jakejames Lugo takes over hosting duties on this episode of The Co-op podcast as our regular host couldn't make it. Richard Bailey Jr. Jakejames Lugo and I had many interesting discussions including Dan Houser's quote about the masculinity in GTA 5. As gamers we would love to see a female protagonist in a GTA game, but Houser's quote suggests that the story has to make sense for it to happen.

But with the touchy stigma surrounding women in video games and how they are portrayed, can a female lead in GTA work? - Let us know what you think, and check out Richard Bailey's article based on this subject.

I have to side with Rockstar on this one. I don't think a female lead in such a setting would work realistically . I mean 90% of professional criminals and gangsters are men. Where you find a "bonnie" in such situations, you usually a "Clyde" as well.

I work in the Probation Services, and women do not commit the same type of crimes as men, are not as prolific in their criminal activities and are generally not as violent. Where women have gang affiliations you always have a male as the kingpin.

Rockstar did their research well (working with Prisoners, The FBI and gang members) and I'm sure the game simple reflects the conclusions of their research. Generally speaking you don't find women in such "GTA V" roles.

A female lead can work if the story and missions are structured properly. Rockstar should try it though, I don't think we've seen a open world crime game starring a female (at least not to my knowledge).

Even though a female lead can work in GTA, I highly doubt that Houser will go that route now. Given that GTA V has 3 lead protagonists, it would have made the most logical sense to explore this option now in order to switch things up and emphasize the differences between all 3 characters. Of course, I could be wrong and GTA 6 could have a female lead but I highly doubt it.
