This company is massive one of two in the water cool space so if it goes poof then thousands out there have no spare parts or half built computers.

Nope. Outlast and Slender: The Arrival tell me otherwise. Scariest bunch I've ever played, followed by Siren: Blood Curse on PSN, which while it has combat, is very limited and, often times, requires you to just run.
I think weapons like bats, wrenches, axe's etc are fine and actually make the game more realistic. I like being able to pick up things in the environment to at least try to defend myself. This doesn't mean that they have to be effective though I think the scariest thing ever would be running from some kind of creature, finding a bat and trying to take it out only to have it break or do no damage. Guns are the issue here as they take away far too much of the tension but a lone hand gun every blue moon to lull you into a sense of security is fine.
Strongly disagree with this article! If anything, making horror games so combat-oriented is what has diluted the genre and has made the games LESS scary! There's a reason why the genre is called SURVIVAL horror and not combat horror! When are developers going to be smart enough to realize that using your wits and making the object of the game to simply stay alive makes for a much creepier experience than being armed to the teeth and mowing down enemies?
What if the horror game contained Ghosts ( which i don't think there is a game like that except Fatal Frame maybe ) how can you fight them ?!
As much as I love horror games that don't allow you to fight back, there is a lot to be said for including a combat system. One way to look at it is that giving a person the ability to act, but the inability to do so effectively, can add a whole new layer of fear to a horror experience.
A simple example would be a wild animal. Say you were completely incapacitated, and then thrown into a pit with a hungry lion. While there is terror in being completely helpless, there is also a sort of peace of mind that comes with knowing that there's nothing you can do, which makes it easier to give in and accept your fate. On the other hand, say you are thrown into that same pit, with that very same lion, but free and unarmed. You can try to fight, and you may get lucky and win. However, odds are you will struggle until your swift death, or until the despair that comes with the realization of futility, followed by a swift death.
To simply state that combat, or a lack thereof, will make for a (less) scary game is to approach the subject with an unhealthy and close minded perspective.
