Tales of Xillia Review: Comfort Zone | Polygon

Polygon: "Tales of Xillia is loaded with recycled mechanics and story that's oozing well-worn plot devices out of its JRPG pores, right down to its predictable cast and "save the world" theme. It's cheesy and weird in some places, but heartfelt and genuinely interesting in others. The game's fast-paced battles kept me alert and engaged through hundreds of encounters, and for better or worse, there's no shortage of story. Tales of Xillia feels like wrapping yourself in a comfortable blanket. It's like an old friend. It exemplifies everything the genre is today — good and bad — and serves as a reminder of why I fell in love with JRPGs in the first place." (PS3, Tales of Xillia) 7/10

I'm loving it. Still haven't beaten it just yet as I'm taking my time to really enjoy the experience. As always with a Tales game, I just can't get enough of the characters and their interactions/dialogue. :]

The skits are like the best part. Alvin is so hilarious.

Same score as The Last Of Us I think. Maybe this time they learned a bit more about video games and how to play them.

I still refuse to open any Polygon links. Maybe one day when they cease to be a bunch of posers...
Nah, still don't deserve the hit.

I liked playing Xillia and did 2 playthroughs.
However I agree that it offers nothing new and refreshing. As such a rating between 7 - 8 is good enough in my book.

I've heared somewhere that Xillia was rushed out the door. IMO it didn't really felt rushed, but I have played better RPG's. Having said that, I'll still pick up Tales of Xillia 2 as soon as it hits the stores.

Well, Namdai never marketed Xillia as RPG who did new things compare to other RPG. So i don't know why some people expect something really new from Xillia.

But it did something new if you compare it to other Tales games such as two protagonist and 3D field with free camera. To me, an 8.5 out 10 is a minimun score for Xillia.

The over recycled stuff and missing usual elements from the franchise are a good hint of it being rushed . And xillia 2 fixing those flaws right behind it , is telling too .

Still it's ok , was still an excellent game

I'd personally give it an 8 so a 7 is not that far off. Maybe it's a maturity thing but the awkward teen RPG's were fine when I was an awkward teen but many JRGP's never really grew up. Much of the dialogue and interactions are over the top. Ivar is just plain irritating. Xenogears, Xenoblade Chronicles, Suikoden I and II, Persona, Valkyria Chronicles, Chrono Trigger, FF Tactics are to me gold standard RPG's for their time.

I am new to the tales series having only played Graces F and Xillia but neither of those games have won me over, good games, but not great. My favorite unique feature of the Tales games is the grade shop. Adds to replayability.
