It’s disingenuous, condescending and knee-jerk crap like MG Siegler's (TechCrunch) article that makes the Internet a dumber place.
If you were a 90s kid excited about Nintendo’s upcoming N64 console, you likely read something somewhere about the Nintendo 64 Disk Drive, also known as the 64DD or DD64.
Other nominees include games like SimCity & Tony Hawk's Pro Skater.
There are some good nominees in this list that are deserving to be inducted also, but I feel Metroid has had the most impact on the industry out of all of these. Look how Metroid influenced the evolution of the Castlevania games, and the "Metroidvania" subgenre of games have become a prevailing force in gaming today. Especially now, Metroidvanias are bigger than ever.
I can very much see Resident Evil being added later too, bc it really did popularize and define the survival horror genre. I would say that one is next in line.
If any Metroid game should get the honor it should be Super Metroid , it's perfection in my eyes . 30 years later and I still feel it's the most epic shit ever .
The GBA remake deserves it or Super Metroid, the original was a very sloppy and rushed game programmed in 3 months and it shows.
If you've never played the remake, it's absolutely a must play, fixes basically every flaw in the game. Check out ExoParadigmGamer's comparison video.
“Before even Kirby was born, HAL Laboratory released the super-cute puzzler Adventures of Lolo in 1989 and it has held up beautifully.” - A.J. Maciejewski from Video Chums.
Nintendo will never die, and neither will their mascots.
Even if the Wii U ends up a total failure (it's a failure at this point; doesn't mean it will be in a year or two from now) Nintendo's overall business is safe between the hoard of cash they sit upon and the vitality of the 3DS which is poised for a banner year with a new Pokemon and Zelda coming out.
Nintendo has enough cash on hand to completely scrap the Wii U whenever they feel like it and drop a monster system on everyone's lap. Maybe that is kind of their plan; get away from releasing new consoles when everyone else is. Let Sony and MS duke it out at the same time, then have virtually zero competition when they upstage everyone. Perhaps the Wii U is just something to keep them somewhat relevant in the home console market until things blow over with the PS4 and XBone. When those companies are many years away from introducing something new, Nintendo comes along and blows everyone's mind with a beast system with some crazy virtual reality crap or something. Who knows.
Alright kinda going on a million tangents and making wild predictions now. Point is, Nintendo might lose a battle here, but they aren't going anywhere; they aren't dying, and anyone who doubts the strength of their first-party IPs to move systems hasn't been paying attention very much.
"Here’s the thing: Nintendo might die, but Siegler’s logic for his belief is embarrassing to journalism as a profession and a practice. It’s disingenuous, condescending and knee-jerk crap like his article that makes the Internet a dumber place. I challenge Siegler to respond to any of my points, and I’ll be surprised if he shows up."
Classic.
The fact is that the internet is a dumb place. Any moron with a keyboard can post anything they want, act like they have skills, and we're all worse off for it.
Folks, this is going to keep happening until we FORCE social consequences on this. Those consequences may lack weight, because it is easy to ignore someone you can't see. But I refuse to let this go.
People who are in the 3DS section on N4G may notice my extreme viewpoints on a lot of the bullshit posted here. I may come off as a "troll" to them. The truth is that I am just sick of dealing with this shit. Non-experts trying to act like they are experts. And I'm going to continue to express extreme opinions until there is some legitimate consequence for morons posting moronic things on the internet. Long shot? Probably. But I can't live with an internet that tolerates this. I have too much respect for quality professionalism to let it happen without saying something.
i like the premise of the article - i just wish there was a bit more substance. good job nevertheless
