Ranking The Grand Theft Auto Series

"Well, damn. Only 14 days to go until the mammoth seventh-gen masterpiece drops from the heavens like an atom bomb, strapped to the T with fire-works, which will spell out “GOTY in a big way!” in big, neon-esque traces of letters. Yes, perhaps the only game that can beat The Last of Us for GOTY, Grand Theft Auto V, is almost here. Ever since I was 4, and for the first few seconds I had it, into my PS2 I popped in the gritty, mafioso masterwork GTA III, I have been an extremely hardcore fan of just about every game in the series short of the original, which is quite terrible, and you have my full recommendation against playing it. I feel, to welcome perhaps the new king of the series, as well as open-world sandboxes, or hell, video gaming, I will rank, from worst to best, the games that encompass the violent, provocative Grand Theft Auto series."

For me;
1: GTA San Andreas/ GTA 4
2: GTA Chinatown wars
3: GTA Vice City
4: GTA Liberty city stories
5: GTA 3
6: GTA Advance
7: GTA Vice city stories (haven't played enough)
8: GTA
9: GTA 2
Agree or disagree? The reason why I have GTA 4 and SA together is because i honestly love them both. Also I consider GTA 4 and the expansions to be the complete package. Even without the expansions though GTA 4 would still be up there just maybe at number 2.

Looks similar enough to my list. I'm happy to find another IV lover, since hating on it has become "cool" in later years.

JakemanPS31994993d ago

Its really silly i agree. GTA 4 gets hate because people keep comparing it too something that its not... I always say that think of it as the GTA 3 of this generation, you don't see people hate that do you? /rant over

ShugaCane993d ago

I think hating IV is relevant. I mean, it's an excellent game, objectively. But it was nowhere near half as fun as San Andreas, or even GTA 3. Tons of features just vanished and kinda ruined the overall interest of the game. I enjoyed it as a good action game, but I disliked it as a GTA.

@ JakemanPS31994

There was an interview with one of the houser brothers ( I think it was Dan ) and he actually said that is exactly what GTA4 was. it Was to this Gen what GTA3 was to last gen and it was more about getting the engine and tech right.

what follows after is more about the content in the same way that Vice city and San Andreas were built off the gta3 engine but the focus was more about the content as at that point they now had the ground for the tech done.

I personally don't hate it but when you put it into perspective it should not be the highest rated game of all time. It is good but overrated.

Can't understand why people like GTA 4. Sry, but its the worst GTA for me and one of the worst open world games i've ever played (i played it on PS3, no DLCs).

GamerToons993d ago

Can't understand how you can't like GTA IV. Does it lack substance compared to SA? Yes. Is it a crap game? hell no. Compared to other games (Non GTA) it is still one of the better titles released when the game came out. TLaD and BoGT were excellent DLC as well.

The online for GTA IV was pretty fun too.

I just don't get how people can hate on a game that was well worth the 60 dollar price tag.

T2992d ago

I agree with both of you a little. GTA 4 I thought deviated from the theme of hitting an era and really mocking it well, hence getting great comedy out of an open world gangster game.
My list would be
1. San Andreas
2. Vice City
3. GTA 4
4. GTA 3
5. GTA 2

IV isn't a bad game, it just didn't have that nostalgic feel like vice city (miami vice/carlitos way/Goodfellas , or San Andreas (boyz n the hood, menace to society, west coast gangsta rap).

IV has a good story, the immigrant who comes to the land of opportunity, etc... but honestly I just didn't end up caring about Niko as much as the other characters... however...
- taxi system was good upgrade on san andreas
- comedy clubs, bars, etc were great
- multiplayer was quite fun for a while.

With all those added elements, IV was a good game and well worth the money, but very hard to replicate the nostalgia of the previous two. I still would love to see a 30s prohibition era gangster Grand Theft Auto, (since RDR has sealed up the cowboy era)

Vice City was my favorite. I just liked the characters/story more in that game.

EDIT: Plus SA had so much open space that I got lost and frustrated a lot lol.

HarryMasonHerpderp993d ago

I'm with you on that one.
The whole scarface miami theme was awesome, plus the 80s soundtracks were great.

StoutBEER993d ago

No this guy is wrong in a few. But the one point he tried to make was the gameplay was tight in GTA IV. Sorry but that's BS, atleast with the shooting and cover mechanics. Red Dead Redemption did alot better at smoother controls. Which is one of the many reasons i'm so excited for in GTA V. By the looks of the gameplay trailers, the shooting mechanics seem much smoother. And Vice City was probably the most atmospheric, not GTA IV. And don't bitch at me I stiil play GTA IV online with friends, so no I don't hate it.

StoutBEER993d ago

Okay Shugacane agreed with you until you're last statement. "I enjoyed it as a good action game, but I disliked it as a GTA." WTF does that actually mean. No matter what you say, it's still GTA. I have a friend that says this stupid fucking shit all the time. "I like Halo 4 as a good shooter, but not as a Halo game." "I like Devil May Cry 5 as a good hack and slash, but I hate it as A Devil May Cry game." Damn it. Fuck off hipsters!

San Andreas
Vice city
GTA 3
GTA 4
GTA 1
GTA 2

I have a sneaking suspicion that GTA5 will be at the top of that list come September, or at the very least on par with SA.

Zichu993d ago

I haven't played every GTA, everyone has a different experience with each GTA game they play. The main one I played was Vice City, this was due to me not having a lot of money and my uncle would lend games to me. I would always borrow Vice City.

Anyway, here's my list:

Vice City
San Andreas
GTA III
GTA IV
Vice City Stories
GTA I

The reason being, I didn't play a lot of GTA I, so I can't say I have had enough experience with the game to say that it's better than another GA. VCS was fun, but not nearly as fun as the others.

I see a lot of people enjoying San Andreas more. I do agree that it's an amazing game in the series, it sports a lot of content, character customization and the character design is great, but Vice City was the one I grew up playing.

laijka993d ago (Edited 993d ago )

Of those I've played I'd say my list is:

San Andreas
Chinatown Wars
Vice City
TLaD
TBoGT
GTA IV
GTA III
GTA II
GTA London
GTA

AusWarrior993d ago

Out of the ones I've played here's my opinion:

GTA San Andreas
GTA Liberty City Stories
GTA Vice City
GTA IV
GTA II
