Microsoft hints that Kinect camera technology is coming to Windows Phone

Games console and phone maker Microsoft has hinted that it will bring its Xbox Kinect camera technology to its Windows Phone 8 mobile operating system following its acquisition of Nokia.
During a conference call on Tuesday, Microsoft operating systems group VP Terry Myerson hinted that the firm will work with Nokia to integrated Kinect camera technology into future Windows Phone devices.
Speaking about the Nokia buyout, Myerson said, "In the area of imaging, the Nokia Lumia 1020 has no equal. We are excited to bring this together with our Kinect camera technology to delight our customers."

Why? I get waving at your phone to turn it on if your driving a car so you can input text in by speaking, which can be done on nearly all android devices, but apart from that what is the point of kinect technology in a phone. It seems like a massive cost and almost pointless for a phone. Unless what they mean by "Kinect camera technology" they mean software things like face unlock and all that normal jazz I never touch on my phone

I have never seen so many people hate on technology and trying different things as much as this site.

Why did Samsung implement tech where you could navigate without even touching the phone?

Why do they keep trying to improve cameras in phones.

Why do they keep trying new things? Why why why....

Implementing Kinect...um maybe that's how they could get their version of Siri onto a phone.

How cool would it be to be driving, know that there's a game you want to play when you get home and all you have to say is "Xbox download >game title<" and your phone and system does everything else.

This new phone could be heavily centered around smartglass too.

I'm seriously happy there are people out there who look at things at how it can be better, cooler instead of "I never touch it so F it."

"Why did Samsung implement tech where you could navigate without even touching the phone?"

I have no idea because the idea is flawed. A smartphone is in your face so why is waving your arms around easier? I get it for the car scenario (like I mentioned) but, in normal use, you could just touch the phone as it is going to within arms length. The stuff you mentioned is what I said anyway (the stuff on my phone right now without kinect camera technology):/

Its all because people don't like change and for some reason the technology world has become like a sport where people think they should backup there own side and slang off the others.

People also seem to forget what Microsoft do in terms of RnD compared to alto of the other big names.

Also having one ui, one voice system and one app store across all its Windows platform is a big plus.

I've become a big fan of what Microsoft have been doing over the past few years as all there products I own have just worked and worse well for what I use them for. Yes its not for everyone but that is why we have choice and the more choice the better.

Also people are forgetting Microsoft have just bought Nokia so we will now see them pushing in the Lumia devices along with the 32 thousand Nokia staff they have just taken on.

Things are looking good for Microsoft at the moment yes they are not number one in all the markets but they are starting to gain market share in all the markets they are in to get them noticed and Microsoft will be around for a long time even though alot of people seem to think they won't.

Just what you said would be enough. The text input and the phone camera looking at your face and knowing it's you instead of a pin to unlock. Just little things like that. I'm sure they aren't going to put everything Kinect has into the phone.

You still do not get it.Fanboys do not reason the way you do.

If you wave your arms around to navigate your phone....you're doing it wrong.

The things you consider to be "normal" for your phone wasn't normal 5-10 years ago. The latest flip phone was amazing and they weren't anywhere considered "smart."

But you see that's how tech advances...you try things and if it fails then it fails. If you aren't pushing forward then you're stagnant.

How many people thought CD's were useless when Sony introduced them because their tape players were just fine. Even bluray didn't fly off the shelves when first announced.

HDTV's weren't must haves when first put on the market. People were just as content with their tubes.

If I'm angry cause I question why people don't "see" the point of companies pushing tech then so be it. Just know it's these little things that pop up that makes everything you have in a smartphone seem "normal" now.

Wow "theWB27" very well said. You said things there that should seem common sense to people. But the article mentioned Kinect, so they are going to automatic bash mode.

I am sure people would prefer they phone unlocks by recognizing their faces, over messing around with passwords any day, and have it work even in the dark. Kinect also has sound blocking tech and voice recognition that is suppose to amplify your voice over other voices and sounds around you.

They could also use the facial recognition to create phone avatars rather than using you real photos or just to give people some thing cool to play around with on their new phones.

Just waiting for things to get implemented before jumping all over the idea's is really off putting to me, but is the norm here at N4G. They have allowed themselves to get caught up in the US vs. THEM flame wars.

Anon19741054d ago

Not sure, but I'm willing to keep an open mind. If they use it for something like facial recognition or something, I have no issues with that. Interested to see where they're going with this.

So do you prop you phone up on the coffee table and use the front facing camera to play a motion game?

Because Microsoft, if this is it then you have lost the plot.

they want to share pictures of your back pocket with the nsa :)

Seems like a ok idea, although MS need to seriously work on there mobile OS, it is a god awful system to use. Unfortunately I am stuck with my 920 for another 18 months.
