Sony Worldwide President Shuhei Yoshida has stated in several tweets that the PS4 will only allow for four controllers to be simultaneously connected.
"only support 4 controllers" I don't think there's any need for more than 4. Ive never used more than 2 personally.
pre-order canceled I demand 8 controller support and 8 player split-screen /S
8 player splitscreen would be great! but i guess tvs will have to go up in size before thats possible
I actually played PES with more than 4 people several times ...but I can live without that. I suppose this could be changed with a later update? This seems like a software issue to me.
^^ Same here. Too bad. I'm not going to miss it though.
Gutted about this news! I love the 3 v 3 games on FIFA. It was annoying when they reduced from 8 to 7 from PS2 to PS3. However this will no stop me picking up my PS4 at launch :-)
That would actually be pretty legit if tvs were all 80+ inches and games were in 4k resolution. The future... Also, this is a hardware thing, not software, Sony only has four colors for the lightbar on the DS4 so it couldn't go up because of that lol j/k
8 player split screen? Hell yer. Imagine a game where the more kills you get the more screen space you get over the others. Flipping awesome fun
Didn't you clowns talk smack in the XB1 article of how they were copying sony with 8 controllers? And now you're applauding a downgrade which sony has done? LOL
If you can do duel screen, 8 is awesome. Also, for sports games, 8 is good. Not that it matters to me in the end, just sayin...
Are you guys really going to just laugh this off? PS3 had 7 player support or something like that; why the heck not PS4? As underutilized as same-screen multiplayer is these days, there's no excuse to just DROP the number of controllers supported at a time. This is bad for sports titles, party games, and all sorts of innovative possibilities.
@Silent - It's only really utilised in certain sports games. I can't think of any other genre that used more than four controllers. Not actually a huge issue considering multiplayer online was way more popular this gen. I used three controllers on LBP a few times but no more. I admit more is of course better for people who play sports games like that, but it probably doesn't affect too many people.
The PS3 could support more than 4 controllers, I think it was 7 or 8 controllers.
I bet the PS4 controller is limited to 4 players because of the added move functions, more than 4 controllers at once is probably too much for the camera to track accurately.
No big deal!
I was going to convert to PS4... but this, this is... NO BIGGIE.
Damn, the PS4 is doooooooooooooomed Ot, i've never used more than two controllers on my PS3, now my son is getting older that'll change next gen to three
The only time this comes in handy is sports gaming. Having the option of up to 7 different colors in NBA 2k for my character makes it easy to identify a unique appearance, color-wise. Not sure what we will get now that the maximum is 4.
The max I have used is 4 with family/friends ! MW2 , Ratchet all4one and fifa
I've played a Motorstorm fame in 4 player split screen and that was lots of fun. But I can't think of why you would want to play an 8 person game as each person's 8th of the screen would be really small. But it is important to have split screen for local games when friends visit so I would like to see more games with this feature. But who can afford 8 controllers?! Who can afford 4?!
4 player on older consoles was fun
8 > 4
Well... while more never hurts, I'm much happier to see that Sony pushed for 8 GB RAM over 8 controllers support.
I dn't think the word "only" needs to be in that sentence. 4 is a standard for limit for most local co-op games. Sports games are the only ones I know of that ever exceed 4.
i've played FIFA, with upto 6 ppl together, must be a limitation caused by the audio channel for the speaker in the controller
I understand where people come from, but it is nice to be able to switch on my 4 controllers, then pop on the Move controllers without having to turn off the other controllers. Or what about Guitar hero devices? I found it handy to have 7 slots for devices.
The ONLY time more than 4 controllers is EVER used is in Sports games like FIFA. Outside of that? Pointless.
Don't think I've ever used more than 4 anyway?
Nor I. I cant think of any game Ive ever played that has supported 8 local/splitscreen players.
Bomberman maybe? but that's not split screen. I remember 5 player on the Amiga. 4 on pads and 1 on keyboard.
There isn't really a need for more than 4 controllers anyway unless they release a crazy version of Micro Machines or Power Stone.
God I would love to see a Micro Machines game.
8 players on Micro Machines V3 on PS1 was one of my all time favorite local MP games! Wish Codemasters would release a next gen version or a HD remake
I love when people mention Power Stone.
You and Septic should get married at this rate I see the 2 major people on this site agreeing mind blown
Some sports games could be could with it. It's not a big deal, but I could see myself and a group of friends playing some FIFA or NHL together all on one machine. The PS3 had support up to 7 so I thought it would easily have been featured in the ps4 but I guess since they(developers) never utilized it, they thought the feature could be cut.
PS3 supported 7 if i remember rightly, yet i don't think many people used that many at one time. 4 is probably the perfect amount, more would have been nice, but i along with most people only tend to have 3 friends in the same place as me at once. Besides, with online gaming getting another massive boost this gen i doubt most people will even be using 2 controls on the same console...
Yeah PS3 did 7 but I never used more than 3 at a time on LBP.
honestly i never knew that until now. i've only ever used two.
Technically, I believe the PS3 supports "7 simultaneous Bluetooth devices". So the 4 controller thing is fine, but I want to know the upper bound on Bluetooth devices total.
Hopefully not. 4 controllers, and perhaps 4 headsets at the same time, maybe some would like Mouse and key and a TV/BD remote at the same time too(not having to reconnect all the time). so about 10-12 total should be the max useable/sensible amount of units. Any more units would be ridiculous right? I wont die if it doesnt though, I have barely used 4 BT units at a time on the ps3 so for me its allright as of now.
Happened to me once in whole generation. We played PES for 7 players. Lots of fun. Not going to miss it though.
It would be nice to have support for more than 4 controllers. Just the option is great but I don't even have a game that supports more than 4 locally XD... Actually Diablo 3 will be the first game I own that will support 4 players locally XD
COD 4 player split screen is the most I've ever used and will ever use. Anything more is over kill and unless you have a 50" TV, have fun sitting 2 feet way from the TV in order to see anything. No loss here in my opinion. Less is more in this case.
I never used or saw anyother person use more than 4 controllers at a time. It makes a lot of sense to leave it at 4.
I think that might be because its never been in a game. that would totally explain why you've never seen more than 4... not saying 8 is useful just saying in general.
Why does it have to say ONLY other than to try and make it sound bad. 4 is fine for almost all situations. Does FIFA allow more players? Does PS4 allow more controllers if they are wired?
I don't know, let's try to spin up a different title. PS4 supports a maximum of 4 controllers PS4 doesn't support more than 4 controllers. PS4 allows 4 controllers at the same time. You've got to try really hard to come up with a good spin, and the title gets the point across the most effectively regardless.
That first one you listed sounds the most neutral actually but is anyone seriously taking issue with the wording? Any sensible person would realize that having a limit of 4 is the most practical option in almost every case. Also the wording used could directly compare it against the PS3 so I don't find that wording is unfair either.
It's ok Micro machines on sega 8 player you have to plug the controllers into the game cartridge and then share half the pad with friend so I am sure Sony can work something out. :D
Lol, that sounds like a great setup/s
It is a bit crazy. One holiday all the family came over and played it. wires everywhere and trying to hold half a small pad each is funny. Everyone has to be very sturdy tho because if you pull one pad the console will move and crash!
In my situation im fine with just two. Edit: With the way my console is set up i dont have space for more than 2 people around my monitor.
only 4. only ? what 8 player games do you plan to play on PS4 ? XD
Soccer games generally benefit from 6-8 players, but that's a very niche market.
Does anybody remember how many controllers the 3do used to support? I seem to remember that it had only 1 port and you had to daisy-chain them by plugging one pad into another. OT: I think the limit of 7 on PS3 was down to the number of Bluetooth frequencies available, so I presume PS4 will have the same number of total devices (unless they've changed the Bluetooth format without my knowledge ( sneaky bustards). It was only really viable for sports games as I can't see you splitting a screen into seven equal parts very easily.
Gonna miss those side scrollers like Xmen arcade. Local co-op with six players was awesome... why?... because nobody dropped a connection.
This is a bummer since now you can´t play 5on5 NHL with your buddies with 2 PS4s :(
Still 4 is greater than 1
doesnt need anymore than 4 to be honest, i just hope this generation the games will have online splitscreen play, ive found cod to be one of the only ones and its disappointing,
I played castle crashers volleyball with 6 once. That was super fun.
I recall the PS3 being able to support up 7. I never used more than 2. Especially due to the lack of local co-op/ split-screen in most games these days. Rarely would more than 2 ever come into play.
I remember the old days of playing worms with my friends and we passed on just one controller... Btt, but yeah, today I think I'll need at least 20 controllers when I play a game and since no next gen console offers that my only option is to buy 5 PS4's and pretend that they are just a single console. Shocking news for people like me how own a 299 ft screen. /s
Worms created a lot of friendly rivalries with that set-up. If i was playing with my mates and passing the pad around if one us were winning by a huge margin you would just hammer X as you passed the control over so they bazooka the floor infront of them before they even get the control haha
I see we have something in common there :D Idk why, but playing with just one controller created a very different but better experience, but yeah, it does only work in such a round based game, but it was awesome.
I would imagine Sony did their homework and found the majority of PS3 gamers never used more than 4. Also, as the communication is Bluetooth again, if they needed to up the number they would or could via firmware - but I doubt they'll need to. Plus if games come out needing more controllers the dev/publisher could do what Harmonix etc did and supply a USB dongle.
i don't have any friends so this is okay /forever alone
I'll be your friend little buddy. :)
Only half as much control as Xbone... :(
5 would be nice for NHL I've done 5 on PS3 a couple of times and it was fun. But definitely not a deal breaker.
4's enough. 7 is better but I'll most likely be using 2/3 max.
