Giana Sisters: pretenders to the Mushroom Kingdom crown

The original Great Giana Sisters was so similar to Super Mario Bros that it was forced off store shelves. Owing to a series of miraculous circumstances the Giana Sisters have clawed their way back to existence and as of this week their latest game shares residence in the Wii U eShop alongside the latest spawn of the royal line, New Super Mario Bros U.

So given both games have a direct line of inspiration back to more or less the same 8-bit design, what can Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams tell us about what a Mario platforming series free from the pressures of fame might have been like? (Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams, New Super Mario Bros. U, Nintendo, Retro, Wii U)

I'm a massive Nintendo "fan boy", owning as I have every major Nintendo console (and most handhelds) at launch. I remember the original Giana Sisters from back in the day, playing as it did very solidly, if a tad unoriginal. The same cannot be said for Twisted Dreams however. Easily one of the best 2D "platformers" this gen, beaten only just - in my opinion - by Cave Story...though quite different experiences. Buy it and you wont be disappointed.
