Quality Concerns Kept Titanfall off of the PS4

CCC Says: "Titanfall, developed by Respawn Entertainment, is a game crafted by a co-creator of Modern Warfare, funded by the publisher behind Battlefield, and rife with soldiers and giant robots. While the game is multiplayer only, it will feature plot, player chatter, and NPCs in its matches. Having already received over 60 awards at E3, 2013, the game is quickly moving beyond the need for introduction, as I’m sure anyone who would be on the Internet perusing video game websites has some cursory knowledge of the title."

Nice way to twist the words into a different meaning for the title. Title makes it seem like they aren't bringing it to PS4 because it would be as good as the Xbox version.

There is the quote for anyone who doesn't click the link. I agree with you. The title isn't exactly what he says and implies something completely different

That comment made me laugh. I don't know why companies just don't come out and say what really happened. I mean just say, "hey it's an XBone timed-exclusive because M$ offered EA a ton of money."

The article doesn't really say anything about money, aside from the fact that MS ran with the idea of cheap and plentiful dedicated servers for this very purpose.

It makes business sense. Sony doesn't have the infrastructure in place yet to support what Respawn is accomplishing with MS' Thunderhead.

True. They say that large server infrastructure was the main selling point. But PS4 have enough f2p games alreeady with Warframce, Backlight Retribution, War Thunder, Planetside 2, etc. The problem for Titanfall will come when they come running to Sony to take advantage of the large install base.

If they leave it too late no one will want to play it. They will then have to create Titanfall 2. It is a fine line to walk. I hope it pays off for them.

The problems MS are facing apart from keeping f2p games behind the pay wall is their lack of willingness to integrate with PC versions. PS4 are going down this road so PC gamers and PS4 gamers can play together.

It would be a massive thing if we could get PC, PS4 & XB1 versions on the same game.

There was actually an article earlier that talked about EA's rotation being BF, Titanfall, Battlefront.

I wouldn't be surprised if Respawn holds out until the next iteration of Titanfall to bring it to PS4. Not trying to hurt anyone's feelings or anything.

What kept Titanfall off PS4 was Microsofts money-hatting. Plain and Simple.

Nobody available to port it to PS3/4 then where they could make even more money. Everyone knows MS paid for exclusivity be it timed or other.

It's called business. I don't care who does it Sony, MS, etc. Give me the best games whether it be on PS4, X1, etc...exclusive or multi-plat. Why it money-hatting if MS to pays to get a game exclusively on their console? Is that not what game companies are supposed to do.

What you don't seem to understand is that they could not guarantee 60 fps without dedicated servers. Sony and MS were both approached for this project and one request was the need for dedicated servers. Respawn said they did not want to develop their own dedicated server system. Sony did not offer to do it for them but MS did. Respawn pays MS a fee to use their servers. Sony does have their own servers but nothing of the size that MS is offering to developers.

Here is a quote from Jon Shiring an engineer from Respawn working on Titanfall.

"I personally talked to both Microsoft and Sony and explained that we need to find a way to have potentially hundreds-of-thousands of dedicated servers at a price point that you can’t get right now. Microsoft realized that player-hosted servers are actually holding back online gaming and that this is something that they could help solve, and ran full-speed with this idea."

Both SONY and MS were approached by Respawn and at the end of the day ONLY one supplied a solution.

It is a time exclusive, no arguments there, whether it be this game OR a sequel this franchise will definitely end up on the PS4 at some stage. It is more a case of when that is a question that no one at this point can accurately predict.

So if you honestly want to play this game and wont touch an X1 with a barge poll then support Respawn by buying it on PC simple as that.

Since when did a game need dedicated servers to run a game in 60fps? KZSF and BF4 run 60 fps just fine on the PS4 and the are much more demnading games than titanfall. If anything Dice can provide the servers for Respawn if Sonys servers "apparently" aren't cutting it for them. It a timed exclusive and Microsoft payed for it, that simple.

WTF no one is saying you need dedicated servers for a game to be able to attain 60FPS where the hell did you read or believe that, that is what is being implied

It is about reducing online latency during multiplayer matches, it is about no more host advantage when the player with the most stable internet connection hosts a match. No moe host migration interrupting matches like every 5 - 10 minutes.

It is about Developers not having to pay mega bucks to do this themselves and then have to budget even further to maintain it.

Remember it is an Online Multiplayer game, there is no offline mode.

There is more to games then trying to get them running at 1080p and 60 FPS.

Plus Titanfall is running on the Source Engine you know the same graphics engine behind Portal 2 and Left 4 Dead....Its not the latest Frostbite, Cyengine or the Unreal Engine it is quite primitive by comparison.

Still got to give Respawn props for making the Source Engine look so friggen cool

PLUS DICE are going to be busy running their own servers for BF4 why would they unload some servers to Respawn or EA just to get it released on the PS3 or PS4.

SONY are already investigating their online infrastructure so it will get there eventually.

But at the moment I am sure that I have read somewhere that MS Azure Cloud is like only second to Amazon's.

I think this is where people are getting confused.

When they talk quality, they are not referring to visuals and only to a slight degree framerates. We all know that the PS4 can run this game no problem.

They are referring to the online experience. As it stands at present Respawn would have to fund and set up their own dedicated servers for this to happen on the PS4, SONY has pretty much already confirmed this with their earlier statement "Developers can run dedicated servers on the PS4 if they so choose." Another words its up to the Developers NOT SONY.

Respawn is a small studio and do not have the financial overheads to do this, they have even admitted this on numerous occassions.

SONY are still looking at their online infrastucture and investigating ways to improve it.

They have already confirmed that they are working with ISP's across Europe to increase bandwidth

Yet at present this still suggests to me that they are more inclined to let people host their own online games by improving local internet speeds in regions that benefit them. Plus allows smoother streaming for the likes of Gaikai.

All Respawn are saying is they want cross platform parity in respect of their online shooter and at present SONY are not able to guarentee them this without Respawn having to set up their own dedicated servers.

MS are the ones who approached Respawn 3 years ago and gave them there next gen console and help develop it.

MS and Respawn both touted this cloud stuff all summer long. So yeah part of it could be tech as well as MS usual deep pockets.

So my observation is better than yours.

I'm glad it's a exclusive and I've never questioned why naughty dog or gorilla games have not brought there games to a Microsoft platform.

You do know that Respawn is a third party developer (not owned by a platform manufacturer) and ND and GG are studios owned by Sony (the guys who make the PS3/4).

Isn't that the same with Quantic Dream the developers of Heavy Rain and the up and coming Beyond Two Souls.

I am sure they are not a first paty studio but a third party studio who likes working with SONY.

How is that any different from Respawn working with MS regardless of the fact that the game is being published by EA

@Ma1asiah, I think you're pretty much right but, the way I always thought of it was;
1st party - owned by platform developer (ND, GG)
'2nd party' - more of loose term to describe a developer that is independent but clearly has a preferential platform or special relationship with a platform developer so like QD (could also say R* used to be this back in the early PS2 years)
3rd party -people like EA and R* that publish multiplatform and any exclusivity is due to money and most likely to be temporary.

Even though this is an exclusive and one by respawn, it's published by EA. EA in my eyes is as 3rd party as it can get. Who knows though!

I think the game looks cool,

I was patient with Bioshock and it finally came to the PS3 so...

Still waiting for L4D though.
