Culpability of Video Games in Some Modern Tragedies

Video games have been implicated in a few significant events such as the Columbine school shooting, Sandy Hook and most recently, the shooting of an eighty-seven year-old caretaker by the young child who was in her care. As such, it is important to address the issue of the degree to which video games play a role in the occurrence of such events.

I just hate how the media focuses on games, especially in this latest incident. The real focus should be on why an 8-year-old had access to a loaded gun.

Exactly. We should be asking what details the parents knew about and condoned for this kid, not dwelling on the fact that he played a video game that day (which the label says should not be available to him).

This sounds like some parental failure on multiple fronts, but for some reason video games get the media spotlight. It's messed up.

Didn't it used to be violent movies that the media all complained about?

I guess all the violence that happened before games doesn't count.

Media always seems to miss the main point and wants to tell the world that the problem lies in something else rather than parents who should be responsible.

Everyone looks to something to blame - I remember reading a nice article a while back that compared what people say about videogames today to what they said about other mediums in the past - metal music, comic books etc. Its just people being scared and reacting how they know.
